Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill one (1) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Technical Assistant for the Department of Forrest Ecosystems & Society at Oregon State University (OSU). We are seeking a part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week during academic terms and up to 40 hours during summer) Student Technical Assistant positions for the Department of Forest Ecosystems & Society at Oregon State University (OSU). A field technicians is needed to collect data for post fire monitoring in the Hinkle creek watershed to assist graduate research during the spring and summer of 2026. This study is on in-stream ecosystem processes and biotic interactions. We are seeking technician assistance to collect information usingmon freshwater methods to measure biological and physical parameters. The project is based out of Corvallis, OR, although t will be regular travel to field sites. The project will support all transportation costs to field sites. The position will be paid $15.05 per hour. In this position, students learn and build vital career-readiness skills in the primary areas below: Critical Thinking, Teamwork, and Career & Self-Development. Position Duties The primary tasks of the technician will be to perform standardized aquatic data collection protocols in a field setting. Additional duties will include gear and data management (including data entry, ensuring that field gear is maintained properly, maintaining supplies, and curating field sheets and properly storing samples) as well as some lab analyses. On a typical day, technicians will be responsible for packing gear using checklists, driving or assisting with navigation to remote sites on private timberland, hiking equipment out to study sites, following protocols to sample/measure several ecological variables including aquatic vertebrates, macroinvertebrates, water chemistry, discharge, periphyton, and physical habitat, installing/maintaining data loggers, keeping good notes and recording data. When not in the field, technicians will be responsible for entering data and small amounts of lab work. The position is approximately 90% field work and 10% office work. Field efforts can involve several periods of three to five days of overnight camping at sites near the study areas to minimize drive time. An importantponent of each technician's work expectation is to maintain positivity and efficiency throughout the season. Given the limited time to aplish tasks in the field, fostering an atmosp w everyone is motivated to do good work, learn new skills, and work toward team success is critical.
IMPORTANT
A factor that applicants must be aware of is the physical demands in this type of work. Worker safety is the priority on this project, but these sites are not on established trails, tfore, much of the travel to and from sites involves bushwhacking. Applicants should seriously consider that the following physical actions are possible in this work: sliding down steep silty hillsides, using vegetation to hoist oneself up a trail, slipping on slick surfaces, climbing over large wood structures, crouching over while netting fish and salamanders, hacking down vegetation to create trails, traversing slash left after a recent disturbance, etc. Minimum Qualifications Full Employment Eligibility Requirements can be found : hr.oregonstate.edu/student-employment-manual/500-employment-eligibility-requirements Must be academically enrolled in a high school,munity college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term• Graduate student officially admitted toGraduate School:

A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center. Additional Required Qualifications Applicants should have basic experience working or otherwise spending time outdoors and be able to walk through small headwaters with overlying vegetation and uneven surfaces. Field sites range from forested, mountainous terrain with steep slopes and dense understory vegetation to recently burned sites that are open with little shade. Applicants should be prepared to work in a range of weather conditions from cold rain to extreme summer heat. Exposure to biting insects, irritating vegetation and wildlife encounters are possible. Applicants must be able to lift 50 lbs, wear waders 8+ hours/day, handle live animals such as fish, salamanders, and invertebrates, and befortable working without cell service. We will be working 40 hours per week during the summer, but applicants should expect unusual work schedules that may extend through weekends or evenings. Coursework or experience yielding understanding of post-fire effects on forest and aquatic ecosystems. Experience with data collection and data management. Applicants must be available to work part-time during spring term during the week and/or weekends to collect data, andfortable with a flexible schedule. Technicians must be able to work as an effective team member, which on this project includes following protocols, thinking critically, following safety guidelines, considering others, being consistent,anized, and detail-oriented, maintaining a positive attitude, and learning new skills. Eligible students also need to take 5 or less credits summer term to be considered, because students taking 6 or more credits are not allowed to work more than 20 hours per week, and one cannot meet the needs of this project with those time constraints. Further, technicians may spend multiple nights per week outside of cell and internet service. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; tfore, the incumbent must successfullyplete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years. This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; tfore, the incumbent must successfullyplete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
