Working at an animal shelter isn't always glamorous. Much of the work happens behind the scenes: cleaning kennels, doing laundry, scrubbing floors, managing supplies, and keeping animal housing safe and sanitary. It is physical work, and there are plenty of less glamorous moments. But the work matters, and you get to see the difference it makes . The Animal Caregiver is responsible for the daily care and well-being of all animals at the Humane Society of Barron County. Most of the role involves maintaining clean, safe housing and meeting animals' daily needs in ways that reduce stress and support their well-being. Animal Caregivers also observe animals, communicate medical and behavioral concerns objectively, and keep accurate records. This is a physically active, fast-paced role that requires working efficiently and independently while staying focused on safety. Caregivers must be consistently aware of their surroundings and follow safety and security procedures.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Clean and maintain animal housing, including scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, washing dishes, laundry, waste removal, and restocking supplies Feed, water, and care for animals according to established procedures Provide appropriate bedding, toys, enrichment, and exercise Maintain awareness of the surrounding environment, animals, people, equipment, and potential safety and biosecurity hazards Observe animals and report medical, behavioral, safety, and maintenance concerns Follow dog-walking and animal handling protocols Assist with basic medical care, including safe restraint and medication administration Keep supplies stocked and work areas clean, organized, and safe Follow shelter policies and procedures and stay current on changes Communicate professionally with staff, volunteers, adopters, and visitors

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be 18 years of age High School Diploma or GED Valid driver's license and a driving record that meets HSBC's vehicle insurance requirements Preferred experience: Veterinary Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Special Education (SPED) Aide / Paraprofessional, Behavioral Technician, or similar Basic computer proficiency, including efficient typing and use of Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is a physically demanding job performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. The work involves prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, cleaning, and handling animals and supplies. Employees may routinely move materials, supplies, and animals weighing up to 50 pounds and may occasionally need to handle animals weighing 100 pounds or more. The position involves exposure to animal waste, odors, noise, cleaning chemicals, dust, and potential zoonotic hazards.
