A Youth Counselor or Worker works with young people, primarily ages 13-18, to provide mentoring and support for dealing with problems. Works in a school or community-based program; may assist with referrals from parole or probation offices. Collaborates with teachers, family members, social workers and health care professionals to help young people facing challenges or crises.
The SUD Counselor supports the delivery of trauma-informed, evidence-based substance use treatment to youth and young adults through the Bridge to Wellness Program, funded by the Youth Opioid Response (YOR) California grant. This position utilizes the Seven Challenges® model and works within a multidisciplinary team to serve youth aged 12-25, many of whom are justice-involved, in foster care, or facing housing instability. Services are field-based and designed to be flexible, culturally responsive, and grounded in positive youth development.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide individual and group counseling using the Seven Challenges® framework, supporting youth in decision-making, harm reduction, and recovery goals Develop and monitor individualized treatment plans and progress notes in alignment with program and Medi-Cal standards Deliver services in schools, homes, and community-based settings, depending on client needs Collaborate with program partners (MHRS, ECM, THP, foster care, housing, probation) to ensure continuity of care Participate in case conferences, reflective supervision, and interdisciplinary team meetings Engage caregivers and family supports when appropriate to enhance treatment outcomes Maintain timely, accurate documentation and support data collection for program evaluation Attend required trainings and maintain fidelity to the Seven Challenges model Uphold ethical and legal standards including confidentiality, boundaries, and mandated reporting
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in a behavioral health-related field OR equivalent lived/professional experience with relevant training SUDRC (Substance Use Disorder Registered Counselor) or RADT (Registered Alcohol & Drug Technician) Demonstrated experience working with youth or young adults impacted by substance use, trauma, or system involvement Commitment to trauma-informed, harm-reduction, and strength-based approaches Strong written and verbal communication skills; proficiency in documentation Ability to work independently and flexibly in a field-based environment Willingness to complete Seven Challenges® training and adhere to fidelity standards
Preferred:
Bilingual (Spanish, Hmong, or other locally spoken languages) Experience with Medi-Cal documentation or working in a Medi-Cal reimbursable setting Familiarity with the YOR CA grant or similar public funding programs
Work Environment:
Field-based with travel throughout the region; mileage reimbursement provided Must have a valid California driver's license and proof of auto insurance Some evening or weekend hours may be required based on client needs
