A GIS Analyst gathers data that can be used in geographic information system (GIS) maps or products. Gathers data from existing maps and reports; gathers information on people, plants, animals, buildings, natural terrain and elevation.
The GIS Technician Intern provides part-time support to the City's Geographic Information System (GIS) functions while gaining practical experience in municipal GIS operations. Under the guidance of experienced staff, the intern assists with mapping, geographic data maintenance, field data collection, spatial analysis, and GIS projects supporting City departments and operations. This position is designed as a developmental opportunity for a student or recent student interested in GIS or a related field. Work schedules may be structured around academic commitments while meeting the operational needs of the City.
Qualifications:
Minimum Training, Education and Experience Required:
Current enrollment in, or recent completion of coursework toward, a degree, certificate, or other educational program in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Geospatial Science, Urban or Regional Planning, Environmental Science, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Coursework or other introductory experience involving GIS, mapping, geographic data, or related technology. Basic computer proficiency and the ability to learn new software applications.
Preferred Training, Education and Experience:
Coursework or experience using Esri ArcGIS products, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, or related applications. Experience with GPS, mobile GIS applications, field data collection, spatial analysis, databases, or cartographic principles. Previous academic, volunteer, project, or work experience involving GIS or geographic data. Equivalent combinations of relevant education, training, and experience that demonstrate the knowledge and ability to perform the work may be considered.
Requirements- Certificates and Licenses:
Valid Texas driver s license (or ability to obtain one within a timeframe established by the City) and reliable transportation, if driving is required for assigned duties. Ability to work outdoors for field data collection in various weather and site conditions.
