Direct Support Professional (DSP)

PM Pay:

$25.00 per hour We are looking for a caring, patient, reliable, and energetic Direct Support Professional (DSP) to work one-on-one with a very high-functioning individual with developmental disabilities. He is a sweet, caring, and thoughtful person who loves to converse and enjoys sharing his interests with others. He has a great sense of humor and enjoys talking about movies, characters, and the things he loves.

His interests include:

Marvel The Lord of the Rings Disney Pirates Comics Harry Potter Aladdin Mortal Kombat Movies He enjoys getting out into the community and would love to have someone who will encourage him to participate in more social, recreational, and community activities. What You'll Do The ideal DSP will help him build independence while providing encouragement, supervision, reminders, and hands-on assistance when needed.

Responsibilities include:

Supporting community outings and social activities Going for walks and spending time outdoors Taking trips to Turkey Brook Park Visiting Turtle Back Zoo (he currently has a season pass) Going to Barnes & Noble to browse and look at books and comics Going to McDonald's and other community locations Taking him food shopping Going to the YMCA, where he has a membership and would like to swim Accompanying him to get his haircut Encouraging conversations and social interaction Talking with him about movies, comics, and his favorite characters Helping plan and participate in new activities and experiences Daily Living Support He is fairly independent but benefits from reminders, supervision, and some hands-on assistance with personal care.

Support may include:

Hand-over-hand assistance with brushing his teeth and flossing Assistance in the shower, primarily with reminders and supervision Making sure the shower temperature is comfortable and safe—not too hot or too cold Encouraging independence with personal-care routines Helping with breakfast preparation Preparing lunch Assisting with dinner preparation Supporting household and daily routines as appropriate Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who is: Caring, patient, dependable, and compassionate Comfortable working one-on-one with an individual with developmental disabilities Energetic and willing to get out into the community A good conversationalist who enjoys movies, comics and similar interests Comfortable providing personal-care assistance when needed Encouraging and respectful of the individual's independence Creative and willing to help find new social and recreational activities Reliable and able to commit to the Monday-Friday schedule Experience as a DSP, or working with individuals with developmental disabilities is required but the right personality, patience, and willingness to engage are extremely important. Communication & Daily Shift Log The individual's family will use a Google Sheets daily shift log for staff to document how the individual's day went. Staff will be expected to provide clear and consistent updates regarding activities, meals, community outings, personal-care support, and anything else the family should know about the shift.
