Job Description

The Cosumnes Community Services District ("District") is seeking to hire a part-time, seasonal Parks and Recreation Administration Intern for the 2026 summer season. Position Description Under close supervision, the Parks and Recreation Administration Intern supports the daily operations, planning, and community engagement of the Parks and Recreation Department. Functions and responsibilities expected to be performed may vary.
Objectives of Internship include:
To apply academic knowledge of Parks and Recreation in a practice setting. To explore career opportunities in the field of Parks and Recreation. To assess and expand competencies in Parks and Recreation administrative management and policy planning. To connect and acquire in-depth understanding of public sector opportunities. To develop and practice ethical and professional behaviors in a work setting. Our internships provide active high school students with opportunities to grow, explore career paths, and connect with others in their field of study. In addition, Interns have the opportunity to make positive contributions and serve the community in a meaningful way.
Scheduling Information:
The internship typically runs from June, 2026 through Fall season 2026. This position may be scheduled to work up to 20 hours per week. Please note that actual hours may vary and are subject to change at any time based on the operational needs of the program or department. Salary Information The salary range for the Intern classification is between $16.90 - $18.44 per hour. The District typically appoints new employees at step 1 of the salary range. Consideration for an appointment higher than step 1 will be based on experience, education, or the need for unique skills or knowledge, and shall be no more than the mid-point of the salary range. The following duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of a specific statement on duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed. Employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level as required. Assists in planning, organization, and execution of community events, workshops, and park programs; Conducts research on various Parks and Recreation administration related tasks; Assists with marketing initiative and community outreach; Assists with office tasks, data entry, report creation and filing, and maintaining department databases; Provides courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, Cosumnes CSD personnel and the public; Assists in policy planning and implementation; Learning the budgeting and planning processes and filing and documentation work associated with it; Ability to establish and maintain effective communication, working relationships with other employees, participants, and the public; Assists with research, material selection, and design alternatives; Participates in project meetings and the public engagement process; May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Education and Training:
Must be currently enrolled in high school, in good standing with an expected graduation.
Experience:
None required; Former summer civic internship with a municipality is highly desirable.
Special Requirements:
Must be 16 years of age or older on or before the date of hire; Ability to obtain and retain a Work Permit throughout employment, if under the age of 18; Willingness to learn, with a strong desire for continued education within the field of Parks and Recreation.
Knowledge of:
A minimal understanding of municipal government operations (e.g. State, County, City, Special District, or other local governments); Basic office equipment and use of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; Basic principles of customer service; Basic operation of appliances, equipment and office machines including a vacuum cleaner, heating and air conditioning unit, intrusion alarm, calculator, computer, keyboard, cash register, printers and other peripherals, copier, and fax machine; Current methods and techniques used in preparing reports and forms, using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style; Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills; Basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculation of decimals, ratios, percentages and fractions.
Ability to:
Effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in writing with Cosumnes CSD personnel and the public; Comprehend and prepare reports such as score sheets, accident, incident, and behavior reports, emergency, registration, and Hold Harmless forms using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style; Analyze and use independent judgment in problem solving; Work collaboratively in a team environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Mobility:
frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting or standing for long periods of time; occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crawling and twisting, and running while performing field work; frequent pushing, pulling or lifting up to forty (40) pounds for setting up programs, special events, food preparation, activities, games, and crafts;
Vision:
constant use of overall vision; frequent computer use; occasional color and depth vision;
Dexterity:
frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching; frequent operation of office equipment and recreation related tools such as, but not limited to, scissors, plunger, mop, first aid supplies and hand tools;
Hearing/Talking:
frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone;
Emotional/Psychological:
frequent decision making and concentration, frequent public and/or coworker contact; may occasionally work alone; Typical Working Conditions Work is typically performed in an office environment and/or outside in various types of weather. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Work may take place and require travel in a vehicle to and from off-site indoor and outdoor locations throughout the District.
THE PROCESS
Application Review:
Applications will be reviewed after the closing date for possession of minimum qualifications and evaluated according to the essential functions of the job and other needs of the position. After the review of all applications has been completed, all applicants will be notified of the status of their application. Oral Panel Interview - The most qualified candidates from the review will be invited to participate in an interview. Interviews will be in person on Thursday, June 4, 2026. Conditional Offer Procedures - Candidates selected from the process may receive a conditional offer of employment contingent upon the successful completion of the following:
Background Check :
A State of California, Department of Justice criminal background check.
Medical Clearance:
A clear tuberculosis (TB) and drug screening is required. Failure to meet these pre-employment requirements will be grounds for withdrawal of the conditional offer of employment.
Please Note:
Part-time employment with the District is on an "at-will" basis meaning the District or the employee may terminate employment at any time with or without cause.
