ORGANIZATION

Longhopes Donkey Shelter has been a 501c3 donkey rescue for over 27 years. The organization has successfully rescued, rehabilitated, and rehomed more than 1300 donkeys. It is now the nation's leader in the care of geriatric and special need donkeys.

POSITION

The Barn Manger is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the daily care of the equines on site.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum 2-years experience in supervisory role of staff serving equines. Have a current driver's license and reliable transportation.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

Ability to follow instructions. Ability to efficiently and effectively complete or delegate daily feeding, and medical care of the animals on site and maintain aesthetic standards of facility. Ability to work in high stress and emergency situations with exposure to distressed animals that may put staff at risk for injuries such as animals' bites or kicks. Ability to work around various disinfecting and sanitizing agents, and hay. Emotional composure to assist with humane euthanasia. Ability to read and write English. Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to positively engage co-workers and volunteers. Compassion for animals and their welfare. Physical stamina to withstand heavy labor in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions. Ability to lift, push, pull 50 lbs. with repetitive bending, twisting. Ability to walk 2 miles a day and climb a flight of stairs. Ability to use basic office software. Ability to perform basic math.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage caretaker staff to complete mission of employer. Feed and provide water to donkeys. Meet nutritional needs of donkeys.

•Understand donkey health needs to provide routine medical care and determine if advanced veterinary care is needed. Clean barns and paddocks, stock hay, operate farm equipment. Use computer software to maintain records on donkeys' health and training. Train donkeys in basic skills. Create and implement individual rehabilitation/management plans for each donkey. Inventory, organize and order supplies. Train and supervise animal caretaker staff and volunteers. Schedule appointments and work directly with veterinarians, farriers, chiropractors, and trainers. Enter donkey care records on database. Prepare daily, weekly project lists for staff and volunteers. Drive truck and trailer to transport donkeys to and from Longhopes. Work cooperatively, professionally, effectively and demonstrate mutual respect for employees, volunteers, adopters, visitors, and management.
