Job Description

Wastewater Treatment Plant Maintenance Operator at City of Blackfoot in Blackfoot, Idaho, United States Job Description Position Summary The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform supervised semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on pumping and treatment systems in the City's wastewater treatment facility, to include pumps, booster stations, and treatment systems. Emphasis is on repair and maintenance, but wastewater treatment and/or collection operator skills will be required. An employee in this class may be assigned to other maintenance duties in the City's Public Works Department. The work is performed, in coordination with the Wastewater Supervisor and the Collection Supervisor, with indirect supervision from the Wastewater Superintendent and Public Works Director. The principal duties of this position are performed in an outdoor environment that may include working in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of power tools, heavy equipment and exposure to hazardous material. Due to the on call nature of this position, the working hours vary and may include weekends, evenings and holidays. Primary Responsibilities Performs supervised maintenance, inspection, and repair functions on pumps, motors, booster and lift stations, and treatment equipment in the wastewater collection and treatment facility; Performs supervised maintenance, repairs, and modifications on electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, and plumbing systems associated with the wastewater treatment facility; Performs supervised preventative maintenance on emergency power generator systems; Responds to emergency situations; Maintains, rebuilds, and repairs control valves under supervision; Assists with maintaining maintenance and repair work orders, schedules, records, logs, and documents; Assists with building, grounds, and vehicle maintenance, as assigned; Learns plant operation functions to aid in maintenance and repair duties and to assist with operations as needed; Maintains compliance with Federal, State, County, City and other applicable public health environmental and safety standards; May be assigned to operator duties in the wastewater treatment plant during holidays, weekends, or other short-staffed periods and performs other related duties as required. Specialized Knowledge Idaho Wastewater Treatment Operator-In-Training certification within 6 months of date of hire, Idaho Wastewater Collection Operator-In-Training certification within 12 months of date of hire; Idaho driver's license with Class B CDL, air brake and tanker endorsements without standard restriction within 90 days of date of hire; Methods, materials, tools, and standard practices for the maintenance, operation, inspection and repair of treatment equipment and mechanical systems associated with municipal wastewater collection and treatment facilities; Basic mathematical and science principles related to the operation of a wastewater collection and treatment system; Experience, Skills & Qualifications High school diploma or GED equivalency required, with additional technical training and one year of water or wastewater systems maintenance experience preferred OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work; Accurately follow written and oral instructions; Accurately read and interpret technical and operational manuals, blueprints and diagrams, maintain system performance records and prepare written reports; Accurately diagnose, troubleshoot and complete appropriate repairs on plumbing, hydraulic, electrical and mechanical equipment; Operate power equipment and hand tools; Operate specialized system inspection, cleaning, and maintenance equipment as well as general office equipment; Prepare written reports and maintain system performance records; Communicate clearly and effectively with the public and other employees. Essential Physical Abilities Sufficient clarity of speech, hearing, manual dexterity and personal mobility and stamina, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to: discern verbal instructions, communicate with other employees and the public, and discern warning or emergency alarms, including vehicle backup warnings; comprehend written work instructions and work orders, technical and operational documents and diagrams, and read and record meters and gauges; operate a variety of power and hand tools, including specialized meter reading equipment, and to make adjustments to equipment; frequently lift and/or move objects up to 75 pounds, and work in an outdoor field environment Sufficient visual acuity required by this job, with or without reasonable accommodation, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
