$85,527 - $104,533 West Valley Cleanup Alliance is the prime contractor selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Phase 1B Deactivation & Demolition Contract at the West Valley Demonstration Project site. The site is a scenic 30-minute drive south of Buffalo, New York. In cooperation with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, West Valley Demonstration Project continues to decontaminate and decommission facilities at this site. Job summary / purpose of position The Junior Radiological Control Engineer is responsible for ensuring radiological control policies and procedures are incorporated into WVDP activities to protect workers, the public, and the environment and to ensure compliance with industry standards pertaining to nuclear radiation. The role functions as technical support for program modernization and process improvements through software development, database management, document digitization, upgrades to instrumentation and calibration equipment, and support other process improvement initiatives. Minimum qualifications A. Education/Experience Bachelor's degree in health physics or related technical field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience. Minimum of two (2) years related experience. Department of Energy (DOE) related experience preferred. B. Licenses/Certifications National Registry of Radiation Protection Technology (NRRPT) preferred. C. Other requirements Knowledge of industry specific software applications (database management, SQL, Visual Studio, Solidworks, Microshield 10, and Aermod). Advanced ability for software design and development required. Understanding of intermediateMARSSIM/MARSAME
concepts and applications. May act in a supervisory role or as a back-up RC Supervisor when evaluating field RCT performance or completing assessments, audits, work oversight, etc. Support RC Qualification Manager in training, qualification development, and technical review of training materials. Major responsibilities / scope of work Maintain a safe and healthful work environment by following established safe work practices and procedures; including following all safety rules, use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE), investigating and reporting identified safety concerns or situations. Adhere to standards contained in the Company "Code of Conduct," Company EEO practices, and DOE directives. Provide technical assistance and guidance on basic radiological control issues. Support project work scope and field activities through work instruction package planning, hazard analysis and control, and exposure mitigation through implementation of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles. Assist with radiological hazard analysis, shielding evaluations, design and implementation of administrative and/or engineering controls. Participate in pre-job planning, mock-ups, and post-job critiques. Review and comment on proposed work and design documents with emphasis on identifying radiological hazards and specifying workable controls. Analyze field data for accuracy and provide input for periodic reports to the Radiation Support Manager. Support Internal Assessment Program (IAP) for reviews and assessments of the Radiation Protection Program (RPP) to ensure functional area adequacy and regulatory compliance. Support the operation, maintenance, and calibration of radiological protection equipment for radiation protection operations, characterization, sample analysis, and exposure monitoring. Support worker and environmental monitoring to ensure radiation protection standards are effective and personnel exposure is maintained As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA). Support development of ALARA reviews, dose estimates, and exposure reduction strategies for incorporation into Work Instruction Packages (WIPs). Perform review of worker exposure and area monitoring data for incorporation into internal and external dosimetry reports. Support preparation of basic special dose evaluations. Provide technical support for radiation safety training for workers, subcontractors, and site visitors. Provide database development and maintenance to support RPP document control and data analysis. Assist in the development of "in-house" software to support radiological field operations and program modernization initiatives. Essential functions Interpret and follow a wide variety of guidelines, policies, laws, and established practices to accomplish complex tasks. Exercise discretion and sound judgment in performing work and recommend improvements to operations and/or processes. Identify and resolve a wide variety of complex assignments. Use independent judgement to provide solutions to a wide range of complex problems. Manage projects and special assignments to deliver results on time and within budget. Exchange information, resolve problems and coordinate tasks effectively through written or verbal communication. Interface with individuals or groups from inside and outside of the organization. Follow detailed written and verbal instructions from management to perform assigned task according to established procedures. Plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts and resolve problems toward mutuals goals.
