Job Description
We are delighted that you are considering a role as Deputy Director of Workplace Services in our Defra Group Property (DgP) function. This is an exciting time to be a leader in the Civil Service and within Defra’s Property team. Our Group Property assets underpin services that span critical national infrastructure, offices, depots, science facilities, incident response sites, inspection points, forestry and agriculture. Our sites enable delivery of national policy, response to flood warnings, border controls on the import and export of food and animals and the effective response to disease outbreaks in animals. These services require ongoing investment to keep them user centred, resilient, safe and secure. The postholder will play a significant role in prioritising that investment and ensuring we allocate resources efficiently. We have also established Defra Group Property as a leader across government on Land. This responsibility will help drive better policy outcomes, improved data, enhanced capability and improved collaboration across departments. Defra group is now a department of around 30,000 staff with a Property budget of more than £275m a year which includes both the management and investment across the estate. We are currently in year 2 of our new Workplace & FM transformation programme which incorporates a new £800m multi-year contract for services that will help ignite a “one DgP” culture. This means completely changing the way we plan, deliver and run our services offering our users quicker and better outcomes. Our new Property & Location Strategy will see us deliver a smaller, greener and better estate as part of wider government ambitions. As DD for Workplace Services you will act as the strategic led for delivery of our services in a safe, complaint and secure way. You will also horizon scan and be part of a team that sees digitisation and more efficient ways of working as a key part of our offer to our people, stakeholders and the public. Key Responsibilities This is a national role which works across the whole of the Defra Group Estate which ensures the strategic & operational delivery of Workplace Services (Facilities Management) across the whole property portfolio so that offices and relevant operational estate are well managed, legally compliant, safe and productive places to work. The role provides day to day leadership of circa 130 staff and overall management of a £70 million operational budget. There is a clear expectation for continuous review of both facilities management delivery and broader workplace services to give the capability and capacity for development of common processes, standards and change. The post holder will also be responsible for driving efficiency and to be reflective of changing priorities of a diverse stakeholder landscape. The role will be a champion of diversity and be stakeholder focused to ensure property reflects, and takes full account of, the users of our services and the society we serve.
