Professional Hourly Job Description:

The Desk Supervisor, a Library Associate 3 position, reports to the Head of Circulation and is responsible for answering patron questions and assisting with resolving issues related to library accounts. They also work closely with the Circulation Student Coordinator who supervises student workers, helping with their training and the assignment of duties during shifts.

Responsibilities:

35% Supports front desk operations and assists with the circulation of library materials, collecting fines, helping patrons with questions or issues, processing cards for all authorized user categories, and completing data entry projects. Maintains and updates lists of additional users/special borrowers. Suspends library privileges for patrons with resigned or canceled status. Assigns carrels to faculty and graduate students each semester. Oversees book delivery operations. 20% Supervises the placement and removal of materials onto/off Reserve; communicates with faculty to resolve problems; provides outreach to faculty regarding new services; implements new electronic reserves functions; trains and supervises student workers while they are assigned to Reserve activity; supervises circulation of materials on Reserve. 30% Maintains inventory of Gear-to-Geaux circulating materials. Coordinates the ordering of parts as necessary, as well as other needed supplies for the department. 10% Serves as the liaison to the business office coordinator to make sure that cash payments taken against all receipts are recorded daily. Bills patrons and administers refunds as necessary. Maintains $75.00 cash for making change and physical records for credit card payments and refunds. Saves copies of departmental transactions for monthly reconciliation by department head. 5% Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and at least 1 year of relevant experience. At least four years of library experience may qualify as a substitute for the required degree

Preferred Qualifications:

1 year supervisory experience; knowledge of editing library catalog records.
