The Gregg acquires and preserves a vast collection of art, craft and design relevant to the university, the community, and the state; encourages and facilitates the use of the collection for teaching, learning, research and enjoyment; creates 6-8 thought-provoking exhibitions each year, which are accompanied by educational publications produced by the museum; and facilitates critical and creative thinking, lifelong learning, and a passion for discovery through an extensive series of artist residencies, workshops, symposia, classes, lectures, student programs, and art activation across campus.

Primary Purpose of Position:

Coordinate the implementation of Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act for the Gregg Museum of Art & Design’s collection.

This includes:

Communicate with tribes for approximately 15 objects identified as potential sacred objects or objects of cultural patrimony. Assist with consultation and repatriation requests Research questions from tribal representatives Facilitate preparation, consultation, etc. Coordinate and complete documentation Identify potential group affiliations for approximately 30 Native American items in the Gregg Museum’s collection currently listed as “unknown tribe” Examine museum records Use comparison objects to identify possible affiliation Consult tribal experts to verify affiliation Record affiliation in the museum’s documentation and database Consult with tribes on all holdings in the Gregg Museum’s collections including approximately 350 objects from over 50 US tribes, regarding directives on storage, treatment, handling, exhibition, access, and research. Use NAGPRA tribal contact list to ensure all proper contacts are made Record information about use for kinds of objects Note directives in museum documentation and database Coordinate with staff to rectify current uses/methods not aligning with directives Conduct additional research on collections items as needed for museum projects including exhibition preparation, inventory, and class inquiries.
