Overview:

Accessible Towns is an innovative project dedicated to providing a comprehensive online directory that rates the physical accessibility of various establishments, helping individuals with mobility challenges navigate and enjoy local businesses, including restaurants, activities, and tourism-related venues. The pilot for this project, Accessible Asheville, aims to evaluate the accessibility of establishments in the Asheville area, ensuring that our users can confidently access and experience the community. We are seeking a detail-oriented, personable, and flexible Accessibility Assessor to join the project team. This role involves assessing a variety of local businesses (names will be provided) using a structured checklist, taking photos, and inputting information into Google Sheets.

Key Responsibilities:

Visit various local establishments in Asheville, NC, as assigned (list of locations will be provided). Assess and rate the physical accessibility of each location based on a detailed checklist. Take clear, relevant photos of each location to document the accessibility features. Accurately catalog all collected data into Google Sheets, ensuring all fields are completed thoroughly and correctly. Communicate with restaurant and business staff to ensure accurate data collection and build positive relationships. Represent Accessible Asheville/Accessible Towns in a professional and personable manner. Ensure that the data is valid and of the highest quality, as it will be used by individuals with mobility challenges to navigate the community. Be flexible with scheduling based on business hours, ensuring minimal disruption during peak times.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to follow instructions carefully and ensure thoroughness in data collection. Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact comfortably with restaurant staff and business owners. Comfortable on your feet for extended periods and able to visit multiple locations in a day. Own transportation and the ability to travel around Asheville and surrounding areas. Flexible scheduling and adaptability to business hours, including evenings and weekends. Ability to work independently and manage time effectively. Previous experience in customer service, research, or similar roles is a plus.

Additional Information:

This is a temporary contract position with potential for extension, based on the project’s evolution. This is a paid position, classified as 1099 (contractor). Training will be provided directly by the project lead to ensure clarity and consistency in data collection. You will be an important representative of Accessible Asheville/Accessible Towns, and building good relationships with businesses is critical to the success of this project. Flexible working hours, but some availability during peak business times (such as dinner hours or weekends) is necessary to gather accurate assessments.

Current Offerings:

Pay rate: Starting up to $20/hr with mileage reimbursement for travel distance between locations of $.65 per mile. Mileage pay begins after the first assessment and ends with the distance to the final assessment. Can work as many or as little hours in a week with an expectation of averaging 4 completed assessments (including documentation) per hour, and weekly communication of an intended schedule.
