) The National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Study (NHBS) is an annual CDC-sponsored project in NYC and other participating sites. The project is aimed at measuring HIV prevalence, testing, access to and utilization of HIV prevention services, and behaviors among priority groups. In 2025, we will be conducting a cycle among heterosexually active persons (HET). Participants will undergo an interviewer-administered survey, be offered testing for HIV and syphilis and be linked to care and services. Participants will be recruited via respondent-driven sampling (RDS), a peer-recruitment method, with a recruitment goal of 500 participants.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The HIV Epidemiology Program (HEP) of the NYC Health Department is recruiting Study Interviewers for the

cycle. The Interviewers will report to the NHBS Study Operations Supervisor (SOS). The Study Interviewers will conduct confidential standardized quantitative interviews with the HET community using a study tablet. Study staff in this position must: 1) adhere to strict detailed survey research protocols; 2) comply with strict protocols for confidentiality; 3) have strong attention to detail; and 4) have the ability to establish rapport with diverse racial/ethnic, socioeconomic, and sexual orientation groups. Training for all study activities will be provided. Staff in this position will be expected to maintain confidentiality, effectively communicate with their supervisor daily, and be prompt for all study activities. This is a temporary part-time position until the sample size is met. Evening and weekend hours may be required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepare and maintain interview materials and supplies. Screen potential participants for eligibility and obtain informed consent. Conduct in-person standardized surveys with study participants. Conduct recruiter training for eligible study participants. Document study activities. Maintain data integrity (i.e., all data collected accurately represents the information provided by a participant). Comply with guidelines for maintaining safety, data security, and participant confidentiality. Follow local safety procedures and report any incidents and adverse events to the SOS or PD immediately. Participate in all NYC Health Department and CDC required trainings. Assist with other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED. Fluent in Spanish (preferred, not required). Ability to learn and use computerized interview programs. Ability to work shifts during evenings and weekends. Comfortable asking questions about health, sex, drug use, and stigma/discrimination. Ability to work as part of a research team.

LOCATION AND HOURS

Up to 28 hours per week, 4 days a week. Workdays are Tuesday-Friday with the potential for weekend or evening work scheduling. Locations on Tuesday and Wednesday will be at 158 E 115th St, New York, NY 10029 and Thursday and Friday at 259 Bristol Street, Brooklyn, NY 11212. This position is temporary and will be funded until the target sample size is enrolled (n=500) or December 15, 2025, whichever is sooner.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

$28.29 per hour. Compensation for this temporary position is hourly. Selected candidate is eligible for benefits via staffing agency.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This position will be hired through a staffing agency. There is potential for this position to transition to DOHMH and therefore candidates must meet DOHMH eligibility requirement including NYC residency.
