Building and Zoning Associate 2.5 2.5 out of 5 stars 180 High St, Wakefield, RI 02879 Job Details Category Building & Zoning Department Status Open Posted June 25, 2025 Closing July 10, 2025 11:59 PM The Town of South Kingstown, a diverse coastal community of 30,000 citizens, is seeking a skilled professional for the role of Building and Zoning Associate. This position reports directly to the Building Official and supports the operation of the Building Inspection/Zoning Enforcement Department. This highly visible position requires someone with exceptional people skills, the ability to multi-task, stay organized, and function well under pressure. Under the general direction of the Building Official, this position is responsible for complex administrative, clerical, and technical work requiring independent judgment in the application of prescribed policies and procedures. Duties include answering technical questions and clearly communicating information to the public, builders, and contractors; scheduling inspections; preparing department correspondence; managing the electronic building permit system; logging and tracking complaints and violations related to property maintenance and zoning issues; preparing notices of public hearings, ads, and agendas for all Zoning Board meetings; attending evening meetings and preparing associated meeting minutes; developing, maintaining, and managing a rental registry system and other similar systems as required to properly regulate activities in accordance with state and local laws, codes and regulations; developing and managing content for the departmental webpage; investigating and following up on citizens requests for public records; maintaining monthly reports; and other tasks and duties as assigned and outlined in the formal job description. The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or GED equivalent and five years of progressively responsible experience in modern office practices such as word processing, accounting and computers, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate degree or equivalent preferred. Applicants must be able to obtain ICC Permit Technician Certification within 6 months of hire and possess strong administrative and organizational skills. Strong computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet management, and database management are required. The starting salary for this Grade 7, 35-hour/week, NEA local SKMEA position is $29.66 per hour. Upon successful completion of a six-month probation period increases to $30.46 per hour, and includes a full benefit package. Application materials will be accepted through Thursday, July 10, 2025.
