Clerk & Master Deputy I Sevier, County of (TN) Sevierville, TN Job Details Part-time $17.17 – $19.32 an hour 1 day ago Qualifications Filing Research Mid-level Full Job Description JOB The Deputy Clerk I is responsible for supporting Sevier County Government by performing a variety of clerical, administrative, and legal support duties in the Chancery Court, with a primary focus on the processing and management of delinquent tax cases. The primary areas of responsibility include filing annual tax suits, preparing and issuing legal documents, conducting property research and title searches, coordinating with internal and external agencies, and assisting with tax sales and court proceedings. This position also involves maintaining accurate and detailed records, responding to inquiries from the public and attorneys, preparing certified mailings and notices, and attending court sessions and committee meetings as needed. Job performance for this position will be evaluated by the Clerk & Master based on the accuracy and completeness of case processing, compliance with legal procedures and deadlines, organizational and research skills, and effectiveness in interacting with coworkers, government departments, attorneys, and the public.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Files annual delinquent tax suits for Sevier County and the City of Sevierville; imports or manually keys parcel data and applies court costs.

Verifies tax suit aggregates with the Sevier County Trustee and the City of Sevierville for accuracy.

Researches real, personal property, and public utility tax records to identify current ownership, lienholders, and responsible parties using title searches, internet research, and official government systems.

Coordinates regularly with the Trustee’s Office, Assessor’s Office, and Register of Deeds to gather and verify tax-related information.

Issues summonses for all parties of record and prepares tax sale notices and non-resident notices; mails certified letters and arranges personal service as required.

Notifies relevant attorneys and agencies (e.g., IRS, TennCare, State Tax Lien Unit) of pending tax sales and files necessary documentation.

Prepares legal documents including motions, orders, petitions, and redemptions related to delinquent tax cases.

Maintains, organizes, and updates physical and electronic files for parcels involved in or sold at tax sales.

Coordinates and oversees tax sale proceedings in conjunction with the tax attorney and legal staff.

Prepares daily flash drives to transmit payment data to the Trustee’s Office for reconciliation and updates to tax records.

Appears in court as needed to support delinquent tax cases and proceedings.

Files claims with bankruptcy court when applicable and manages all related filings and documentation, including maintaining access credentials.

Provides requested reports and documentation to internal auditors regarding delinquent tax cases and collections.

Serves as Secretary of the Delinquent Tax Committee and attends Clerk’s meetings as required.

Assists with general office operations including answering phones, serving customers at the front counter, and issuing certified copies.

Performs postal clerk duties such as overseeing postage budgets, paying postal bills, making deposits, and assisting with mail processing.

Supports other Chancery Court functions, including civil, court cost, and child support services, as needed.

Performs other related and assigned duties as required.

Supervisory Requirements This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Competencies Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, systems, and equipment including computers, court software, and internet-based research tools.

Ability to apply court procedures, legal standards, and operational guidelines in a consistent, accurate, and impartial manner.

Knowledge of court documentation practices, legal terminology, and judicial filing processes related to delinquent tax suits.

Ability to perform detailed property and tax research using county databases, online search tools, and government records.

Strong organizational and decision-making skills to ensure timely and accurate processing of case files, court orders, and tax sale preparations.

Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally both orally and in writing with attorneys, government agencies, co-workers, and the public.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret legal notices, court orders, tax records, and governmental regulations.

Proficiency in preparing motions, petitions, notices, correspondence, and certified legal documents in a clear and professional format.

Effectiveness in responding to questions from the public, attorneys, and government officials regarding court procedures and delinquent tax processes.

Demonstrated capability to identify problems, assess information, and develop solutions within the constraints of legal procedures and limited precedent.
