Home to School Liaison Responsible to: Building principal, English Learners (EL) coordinator and EL teachers
Qualifications:
High school diploma Fluent or near-fluency in Spanish and English for translation and interpretation Ability to work with students, staff, community and parents Organizational skills and time management Required 60 college hours, 20 Hour Online Training or successful completion of the Paraprofessional MEGA. This requirement must be met prior to the employment start date. The Carthage R-9 School District will pay for one Paraprofessional MEGA assessment for the applicant selected for the position.
Primary Functions:
Bridge the gap between home and school by assisting parents to gain information and skills useful in enhancing their child’s learning experience. Assist school personnel as needed to support communication between teachers, administration, support staff, students and parents. Establish and maintain a schedule that supports needs of student, parent and school staff. Provide effective interpreting services to support educational programming.
Specific Duties:
Enrollment Assist the parent and staff in completing enrollment forms, including specific forms related to federal requirements (Homeless, Migrant, Language Minority (EL), Immigrant). Assist families with bus schedules and Free and Reduced Lunch program. Pupil and Home Support Maintain schedule and make parent/home contacts as requested by EL teacher, building administrator and/or EL coordinator. Function as a liaison between school staff, students and parents in specific situations as determined by the teacher, building administrator and EL coordinator. Serve as an interpreter for any and all Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings where one is needed/requested. Assist with proctoring of mandated language testing and assist with accommodations for EL students in other state mandated testing. Perform translation services for requested parent/teacher/school meetings, including but not limited to parent-teacher conferences, open house, or other school events. Perform translation services for school-to-home communications, including but not limited to newsletters, flyers, or other school communications. Assist in the planning and preparation of parent engagement activities to increase involvement of linguistically and culturally diverse families. General Support Attend training for liaisons/translators regularly. Assist administration in data collection related to enrollment information and family engagement rates. Respect the confidentiality of records and information in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws. Other duties as assigned.
