Supervisor/Administrative Assistant Swansboro United Methodist Childcare 665 West Corbett Avenue, Swansboro, NC 28584 Job Overview A Child Care Center Supervisor/Administrative Assistant takes on the essential roles of a leader to other child care workers and an administrative assistant to the Child Care Director. The position helps set the standard for the team in implementing the programs and policies of the center. As a liaison between the Child Care Director and other staff members, the Child Care Supervisor coaches and mentors staff in other child care positions to ensure that the center’s standards are being upheld. They serve as the “on-the-ground authority,” making decisions about policy implementation and taking charge in emergencies. The position is responsible for remembering the purpose of each policy and guideline implemented. The individual assists the Child Care Director in maintaining compliance with regulations and center policies. The position will also take initiative in identifying potential issues, communicating with parents and guiding other staff toward excellence. The position performs administrative assistant duties with great attention to details and strong customer service skills to help meet parents’ and children’s needs. The position works closely with the Child Care Director on bookkeeping and record-keeping. The position will support all staff by arranging meetings, preparing memos, and directing communications. Light janitorial duties may be required, as well as ensuring the center is well-stocked and organized. Depending on the needs, the individual in this role may take on duties such as meal preparation and classroom supervision if necessary due to regular breaks, planned absence, or emergencies. Skill Set for This Job A Supervisor/Administrative Assistant must be kind, patient, and loving, as the position spends the majority of the days working with young children. The individual must be a strong leader. It’s essential that the individual is an effective communicator, because of the interaction with staff, parents, and children on a daily basis. The applicant must be physically able to sit on the floor and lift children up to 40 lbs in accordance with the demands of a child-centered environment.

Daily/Weekly Duties Specific Daily/Weekly Duties Required:

1. Coordinate the Chapel activities with the children 2. Greet each child and parent upon arrival 3. Help to ensure a positive learning environment 4. Help with the supervision of the children 5. Assist with the day-to-day operations of the center when the Director is not available 6. Organize and maintain classroom materials and supplies while keeping the Director advised of equipment and materials needing to be repaired and replaced 7. Answer the phone, take messages, and handle day-to-day communications with parents 8. Be aware of the wasting of materials and supplies by the staff and children while helping to reduce waste 9. Maintain orderly arrangement, appearance, decor, and cleanliness of the center and the playground, ensuring floors are swept, trash is emptied and taken to the dumpster, and laundry is put away 10. Have a good and ongoing professional relationship with the children, parents, and other staff 11. Maintain good communication with the teachers and all staff 12. Close the center and ensure the building is secured at the end of the day 13. Assign the floaters to the schedule of the day, making sure all classes meet the child/staff ratio and ensuring all breaks are covered 14. Train all new staff to meet all child care standards and laws set by NC and policies of SUMC 15. Help the Director ensure the center is in full compliance, and requirements according to NC laws, regulations, and standards

Periodic Duties Specific Periodic Duties Required:

1. Attend staff meetings 2. Have a working knowledge of state day care laws and regulations, and keep updated on all changes made by the State of NC 3. Give tours to prospective parents 4. Assist with keeping laundry clean and put away 5. Assist with keeping the playground free of trash and reporting any damage to the playground equipment, fence, etc. 6. Helps implement the classroom curriculum monthly

Occasional Duties Specific Occasional Duties Required:

1. Attend workshops, conferences, and in-service training classes 2. Obtain the required training hours for the Child Care Center and the State of NC 3. Fill in as the kitchen staff and the classroom staff/teacher 4. Support in the development, posting, and distribution of Child Care Center communications and promotions, both hardcopy and electronic 5. Other duties as assigned Education Requirements For This Job The minimum education required to work as a Supervisor/Administrative Assistant at the Child Care Center is a high school diploma or equivalent. However, candidates with a two-year college diploma or four-year degree in early childhood development, psychology, sociology, or another related subject area will have a competitive edge.

Minimal List of Requirements:
  • High School Diploma
  • One Year of Experience in Child Care
  • Red Cross Certification in First Aid and CPR

Cleared Background Check Organizational Relationship and Supervision:

The position reports directly to the Director, who provides an annual performance evaluation. The Supervisor/Administrative Assistant position will be responsible and subject to the United Methodist policy and doctrine, as well as local church policy as determined by the Charge Conference, Director, Senior Pastor, and Staff Parish Relations Committee.
