Overview
The South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) seeks a dependable and detail-oriented Educational Programs Assistant to support the development and implementation of a new traveling trunk program. Traveling trunks are designed to travel into our schools and community to assist educators in highlighting various topics or events in history. Each trunk will include topic-related objects, teaching guides, standards-based lesson plans, an item guide, and other resources.
To mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, SCSM, in partnership with the South Carolina Historical Society, is creating and touring a traveling educational trunk to tell the story of the American Revolution in South Carolina. This trunk will highlight the state’s crucial role in the war and its significant contribution to achieving American victory.
In addition to supporting the development of the American Revolution traveling trunk, this position will assist with the development of an on-the-floor history carts program and align the traveling trunk to an American Revolution cart, develop digital assets, including digital versions of the traveling trunk materials to support virtual learning, and collaborate with traveling exhibitions staff. The Educational Program Assistant will serve directly under the Volunteer Manager.
The Educational Program Assistant will play a key role in supporting the logistical coordination of this new traveling trunk and will have the opportunity to engage with communities across South Carolina, helping to build support and involvement throughout the state. This person will also coordinate with the traveling exhibitions program Outreach Program Assistant when required to align traveling trunks with traveling exhibitions.
Duties
Assist in the research, design, and creation of the traveling trunk with content centered on South Carolina during the American Revolution.
Develop engaging, age-appropriate materials for educators and students, including standards-based lesson plans, activity guides, and supplementary resources, alignment to an on-the-floor history cart program, as well as digital assets such as online versions of traveling trunks.
Support the logistics of developing and distributing the trunks, including inventory management, condition reports, scheduling, etc. in coordination with the Outreach Program Assistant.
Identify possible new public venues and schools for the traveling trunks.
Collect and analyze feedback from educators, students, and other stakeholders to evaluate the program’s impact and identify areas for improvement.
Assist with generating reports and recommendations for program enhancements.
Transportation to and from venues as needed using state fleet vehicles.
Respond to requests for information about the traveling trunk program.
Complete state drivers training (if needed).
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
Have a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive vans and box trucks.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs.
Bachelor’s degree in history, education, or museum studies, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of South Carolina’s role in the American Revolution and a passion for public history education.
Experience working within a museum, art gallery and/or educational institution.
A passion for museums and community education.
PC proficient (Microsoft Office Suite).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience in creating education materials.
