The incumbent provides information and assists with preparation of forms for veterans on the process for applying for benefits. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: Aid veterans and dependents regarding eligibility for veteran’s benefits and discuss available programs and benefits; Assist and interfaces with the public and veterans concerning the process for receiving benefits and other various programs associated with veterans; Maintain responsibilities in the Veteran’s office; Aid with preparations of the monthly and annual operating budgets; Responsible for ordering and maintaining inventory of VA forms, stationery, envelopes, etc within the guidelines of the Purchasing Department’s policies and procedures.; Prepare or assist with a variety of veteran’s summaries and reports; Maintain a comprehensive, modern knowledge of the laws and regulations pertaining to the Veterans Office; Attend workshops and training sessions as appropriate; Identify collaborative opportunities and serve on committees for community initiatives, as needed; and Perform other relevant duties as required of a Assistant Veterans Service Officer. It is mandatory for the Assistant Veterans Service Officer to: Capacity to learn and implement departmental practices and systems; Implement adaptability skills throughout each work day; Skillful in the use of computers for data entry, spreadsheets, accounting and reporting systems; government accounting systems; Communicate calmly, kindly, and effectively with the public, colleagues, vendors, and other County agencies; Bolster and sustain a professional demeanor with the public, colleagues, vendors, and other agencies; Routinely strive to deliver a positive and productive customer service experience; Cooperate with fellow employees to contribute towards the goals, policies, and procedures used within each department of the Blount County Public Library; and Adaptable and eager for opportunities to cross train.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK

Associate’s Degree; US Veteran; Two (2) years of experience working with veteran benefits & claims processes; Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and Valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, reach and manipulate objects, tools and/or controls. The position requires mobility. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment, such as computer keyboard, mouse, calculator and similar machines. The position requires hearing, mental acuity, speaking, and visual acuity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Most work is performed in a well-lighted, modern office setting with centrally controlled heating and air conditioning.
