This position performs field and office engineering for the maintenance operations that are overseen through the District 1 Office in Division 13, which covers Burke, McDowell, Mitchell, and Rutherford Counties. This position supervises and coordinates reviews of technical plans and drawings relating to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests, subdivision design standards, and petitions for additions. This position requires you to work nights and weekends as needed for emergencies and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes. The selected candidate should have a general knowledge of surveying and methods, equipment and materials used in highway construction; general knowledge of mathematical functions, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry and the ability to read and interpret construction plans, contract provisions, specifications and inspection procedures, as well as the ability to take good notes and have good communication skills. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Knowledge of understanding contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
Experience in performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications.
Working knowledge of computer equipment, (I-pads, desktop), software (MicroStation and ArcGis) and mathematical functions.
Experience in maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry. Experience in conducting independent, moderately complex inspections, with limited supervision.
Additional Expectations:
Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds. Safety Toe Shoes are Required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.
