POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Inspecting inmate mail and parcels for contraband and generating rejection notifications
Communicating with inmates about their mail, books, newspapers and parcels
Communicating with inmate family members about mail, books, etc.
Maintaining legal logs, parcel logs, and other records as necessary
This position is full time on first shift, 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm with a half hour unpaid lunch break.
Note:
Much of the Work involved is physical in nature and requires standing, lifting, bending and carrying items that may weigh up to 50 lbs. Therefore, incumbents in this class must have and maintain adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity to be able to perform the required duties. Due to the nature of this position, incumbents must also possess a CT Driver’s License.

The Department of Correction shall strive to be a leader in progressive correctional practices and partnered re-entry initiatives to support responsive evidence-based practices geared toward supporting reintegration and reducing recidivism under the Department’s supervision. Safety and security shall be a priority component of this responsibility, coinciding with an unwavering respect for the human dignity of staff, victims, citizens and offenders. The MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution is a level 4/5, high/maximum security level multi-mission facility for adult males. Based on its offender population, it is the largest correctional facility in New England. It came into being on May 15, 2001 as the result of the consolidation of the Walker Reception and Special Management Unit and the MacDougall Correctional Institution and sits on a combined 140 acres. The facility is accredited by the American Correctional Association. During its last accreditation audit in June 2008, the institution scored a 100% on the mandatory requirements and the non-mandatory factors. The MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution provides a highly structured environment to manage long-term sentenced offenders, protective custody offenders and high bond unsentenced offenders with programs designed to address the needs of each population.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS
(NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the receipt, processing, and distribution of mail.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Sorts, distributes, and routes incoming and interoffice mail; Operates automatic postage application equipment, mail inserters, and weight scales; Weighs and stamps postaged, franked, or metered mail; Drives state vehicles in the delivery of United States and interagency mail; Picks up and delivers mail at United States Post Offices; Signs for insured, certified, registered, and special delivery mail; Updates and maintains records; Schedules vehicle maintenance; Provides postal service assistance to customers; May maintain daily cash records; Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates, and classes of mail; Skills
oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills; Ability to
follow oral and written instructions; perform basic arithmetic computations; utilize computer software; operate computerized and mechanical postal processing equipment; Mechanical ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS – GENERAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving the operation and maintenance of mail service equipment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with Quadient mail equipment;
Experience working with Pitney Bowes mail equipment;
Experience using Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.);
Experience working with PeopleSoft or other similar software.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weight.
