JOB OBJECTIVES
Operate hospital’s telecommunications systems. Provide rapid, accurate, and courteous handling of all calls.

Responsibilities:
Operates PBX switchboard. Receives incoming telephone calls. Relays calls to appropriate personnel or patients. Answers attendant lines. Places long distance calls when requested. Handles emergency communications. Maintains files on location of patients in the hospital. Provides patient information. Pages hospital personnel or physicians as requested. Operates radio communications system to relay messages. Maintains assigned logs and records.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Other duties as assigned.

Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to customer or patient population assigned. Must demonstrate competency of the unit specific functions described in the performance continuum, skill lists and/or standards.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
A high school diploma or its equivalent is required. Must be able to read with comprehension and write legibly. Must be proficient in use of proper grammar. Must be able to operate switchboard and intercommunications systems and be familiar with location and functions of various departments. Must have a pleasant telephone voice and manner.
EXPERIENCE
Six months’ experience as a switchboard operator is preferred.

None is required.
