GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, performs duties concerned with the installation, maintenance, and protection of trees and woody plants throughout the City of Knoxville including the proper pruning and removal of trees according to ANSI standards, soil cultivation and defragmentation, herbicide and pesticide application for the removal of destructive or invasive pests, propagation, and planting. Participates in other arboriculture activities in an urban, landscape, and forested environment. May act as lead-worker over other employees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Prunes and removes trees according to ANSI Standards using forestry equipment. Operates equipment such as chain saws, bobcat dozers, high volume sprayers, blowers, compressors and other forestry equipment and occasionally assists in maintenance using an aerial lift truck. Applies chemicals such as fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides to control invasive or unwanted weeds, insects, and plant disease and improve plant health care as needed. Plants and waters trees according to ANSI standards. Performs soil defragmentation and root mitigation and applies soil amendments as needed. Completes daily work reports and maintains records of maintenance completed or needed. Plans work and gathers all necessary tools and equipment that is to be completed on a daily basis. Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of modern principles and practices of arboriculture, forestry, and landscaping and related fields. Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and practices used in the planting and transplanting of trees. Knowledge of pesticides and the correct chemicals, application, and rates to spray in order to achieve objective without plant injury Skill in the use and maintenance of various tools and equipment used in forestry practices. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Ability to keep records and file reports regarding maintenance and scheduled work. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under unfavorable weather conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position consists of primarily heavy work, requiring the incumbent to exert up to 1000 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 50 pounds (or less) of force frequently, in order to lift/carry, push/pull, or otherwise move objects. Work in peculiar positions from various heights. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires the use of relevant principles and procedures to solve practical problems and to deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Some experience in landscape design, installation and/or maintenance; grounds maintenance; turf management; or nursery experience which included soil and plant preparation and care. Ability to obtain an appropriate Tennessee Driver’s License as required by state law. Must possess the appropriate State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and endorsement(s) 6 months after start date.
