08/08/2025 IIT seeks an energetic, well-organized individual committed to the conservation of Islesboro natural resources. The Preserve Stewardship Manager will work with the Executive Director and others to manage IIT Preserves and Trail systems. This is a full-time, year-round, professional land trust position. Principal work tasks include monitoring and engaging in projects at IIT’s 13 Preserves; reviewing, updating and fulfilling Preserve management plans; property mapping for Preserve stewardship and other IIT functions; undertaking and managing volunteer trail and Preserve work; articulating and pursuing research, whether independently or performed by others under contract, that enhances the island community’s understanding and appreciation of the Preserves and other ecological features in and around Islesboro; maintaining agricultural endeavors at IIT’s Blueberry Hill, including 4 acres of native blueberries; and assisting with educational and other activities related to IIT Stewardship. Qualifications A love of nature, familiarity with ecology and eagerness to learn;
Experience in chainsaw and power tool use;
Basic computer skills – additionally beneficial to have experience using land data software, Landscape, and other mapping abilities;
Well-organized work style with the ability to work independently and as part of a team;
Ability to work with volunteers and community outreach programming;
Committed to the IIT mission of land protection, environmental education and advocacy. Responsibilities Work with the Executive Director and other IIT staff and volunteers to create and maintain trails and manage the social and conservation values of IIT Preserves;
Review all Preserve management plans, updating and fulfilling tasks as time allows;
Develop understanding of and appreciation for the ecological characteristics of IIT Preserves; using those characteristics for management and educational uses;
Maintain the current 13+ miles of IIT trails to safe, consistently high standards;
Maintain 4 acres of native blueberries and other Agricultural endeavors at IIT’s Blueberry Hill Preserve;
Undertake Preserve management needs, often with others, including but not limited to repairing and building bridges and kiosks, creating outdoor classrooms and installing amenities;
Work with Executive Director to identify, explore and follow through with potential ecological projects and research opportunities on IIT Preserves, enlisting outside expertise when needed;
Incorporate volunteers in Preserve management activities;
Identify and create plans to address natural resource and land use issues on IIT property and elsewhere on Islesboro;
Assist with outdoor educational and other IIT events; and
Become familiar with and assist in other IIT land conservation, natural resource education and environmental advocacy work. Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Reliable and resilient colleague who is appropriate, considerate, collaborative, timely, and efficient.
Experience and competency with chainsaws and various power and hand tools;
Background in, or relating to, ecology or environmental science;
Self-motivated, well-organized and can work well independently and as part of a team;
Passionate environmentalist with familiarity of environmental issues;
Computer competency – experience in using land use database, Landscape, and other mapping software, beneficial; and
Skilled in volunteer development and community outreach. Compensation The right candidate will receive a salary of $50,000 – $52,000/yr.
