Job Description The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking a part-time Instructor within the Environmental Education Programs & Support Office. This position is responsible for assisting with program instruction, planning, and youth mentorship for the Neighborhood Ecology Corps (NEC) Program. The NEC is a three-year, environmental literacy program serving 6th-10th grade participants through weekly programs and field trips during the school year. The NEC strives to build environmentally literate citizens who are connected to their communities, specifically focusing on serving youth in Southeast Raleigh. The program meets weekly after school throughout the school year at Walnut Creek Wetland Park, and will take field trips to parks, museums, and more on select teacher workdays. This position may occasionally support internal programming at other sites, teams or groups within the Department and City. The Nature Preserves and Programs Team is part of the City’s Natural Resources Unit, which is devoted to connecting people and nature through experiences, conservation, and education and is comprised of 3 Nature Preserves, 1 Nature Park, the Environmental Education Programs & Support Office, and the Land Stewardship Program.

Duties and Responsibilities Duties and Responsibilities Plan and deliver weekly Neighborhood Ecology Corps meetings in collaboration with the NEC Program Coordinator.
Supervise students during early arrival and late departure as needed, in collaboration with the NEC Program Coordinator.
Plan, deliver and assist with day-long and overnight field trips, including a week-long camp in August.
Assist with student recruitment and retention throughout the year.
Assist with tracking attendance and checking students in and out of weekly meetings and gatherings.
Assist with facility support, including but not limited to wildlife monitoring, light custodial tasks, and park closing on program evenings.
Drive passenger vehicles of program participants to and from field trips and other outings. Other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications Minimum Requirements:
At least 18 years of age.
Possesses a high school degree.
A minimum of one year of experience working with youth or teens in an outdoor setting or information education setting (museum, park, zoo, or similar) and/or experience planning and delivering programming in natural science, environmental education or related topics.
Ability to work in an outdoor environment in various weather conditions.
Capable of traveling 3 miles over uneven terrain with a day pack/first aid kit.
Ability to respond in the event of emergency situations.
Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Willingness to drive a mini-bus after receiving training from the City.
CPR/First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
An Associate’s (2-year) college degrees or relevant coursework in environmental education, environmental science, parks and recreation, education or related area.
Experience mentoring or engaging with groups of youth diverse in culture, gender, race and ability. Has identities that reflect the youth that we serve, who are diverse in culture, gender, race and ability.
Possession of basic interpretive skills including flora/fauna identification and natural resource management.
Ability to interact with participants, families and partners using clear and courteous communication.
Comfort being in the outdoors and around a variety of native wildlife.
Working knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Additional Information Work Location:
This position’s office is in Walnut Creek Wetland Park in Raleigh, NC and requires daily in-person work and some travel between program site and meeting locations.
Position Hours:
This position typically works 4-7 hours per week. Schedule will include limited weekly evening hours. Some weekend hours may be required. Scheduled weekly hours will vary based on program needs. Employer
