What you get to do:

As an Associate Aviculturist at Discovery Cove, you will: Maintain husbandry of multiple species of exotic birds in a large free-flight aviary.
Interact with park guests and facilitate positive interactions between birds and guests.
Participate in animal interaction programs with park guests; i.e. Flamingo Mingle and Animal Trek.
Perform daily food prep and feeding of Discovery Cove bird collection. Maintain safe and sanitary work areas and animal environments. Ensure safe work practices and procedures by following all departmental, SeaWorld and SEA policies. Work with animals on basic behavior techniques and behavioral modification.
Perform daily observation of animals and report any abnormalities to staff supervisor.
Assist in medical procedures and treatments.
Maintain exceptional standards of safety and cleanliness. Perform other duties as assigned.

What it takes to succeed:

At least 18 years of age.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to pass qualifying swim test and annual swim test competency exam.
Ability to complete provided CPR training/certification.
Valid driver’s License.
Ability to provide exceptional guest service.

Desired qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
6 or more months of related bird keeping experience at a zoological institution.
Prior guest/customer service experience preferred.
Bilingual preferred.

What else is important:

Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry up to 50 lb.
Able to demonstrate strong verbal communication skills and enthusiastically share a passion for animals and conservation with our guests.
Able to perform the following physical activities: kneeling, squatting, bend floor-to waist/waist-to-overhead, reach overhead, simple grasp and fine hand manipulation tasks (use of tools/keyboard/writing).
Comfortable with extensive walking and standing throughout entire work shift and climb/ascend heights.
Ability to swim and work in/around water.
Comfortable with heights.
Ability to train on and properly use protective gear.
Comfortable with exposure to noise.
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and temperature extremes.
Position may be exposed to fumes, dust, odors, and cold/heat temperature extremes.
Ability to perform extensive cleaning duties, including use of cleaning chemicals. Position level and Compensation rate will be contingent on professional zoological animal care experience at an AZA or equivalent facility. Level is determined through review and assessment of applicable experience by Zoo leadership. Experience required for each level is detailed below:

Associate:

Entry level position

Specialist:

Minimum of 12 months (2,080 hours) professional zoological experience

Senior:

 Minimum of 2.5 years (5,200 hours) professional zoological experience
Senior 1: Minimum of 5 years (10,400 hours) professional zoological experience As a 365 day/year operation, candidates are expected to provide flexible availability to support year-round operating needs. This may include, but is not limited to, working opening, mid-day and closing shifts during peak and non-peak seasons, as well as weekends and holidays.
