This position requires knowledge in the preparation, planting, chemical treatment and general care of annuals, perennials, ornamentals, shrubs, small trees and turf. This position requires the ability to perform, supervise, and schedule activities necessary for the optimum health and survival of plants. Organization skills and computer skills (Excel, Access, Outlook, MS Word) are necessary for record keeping, making purchases, etc.

- Schedules assigned personnel to include Horticultural Superintendents, Foreman, and Horticultural Attendant Leaders and Horticultural Attendants, Inmate Crews, student workers and community service volunteers to perform the planting and care of flower and ornamental beds on the main campus at LSU, the Chancellor’s Residence, and South Campus. 20
- Review superintendent zones for needed horticultural and turf care and report/schedule tasks with managers. Perform quality assurance reviews of planted areas within assigned coverage . 20
- Evaluate and document subordinate personnel performance through yearly evaluation and civil service positive discipline procedures. Train and coach all previously mentioned work groups on proper horticultural practices. 10
- Monitor work completion and continuously improve quality control, expedite material requisition to maintain efficient workflow. Communicate results through reports and spreadsheets to upper management and other campus clientele (Building coordinators and dept managers) to assure their satisfaction with the maintenance program. 10
- Supervise chemical pesticide and fertilizer application and maintain Access database. Maintain inventory of chemicals in storage room 10
- Manage plant can-yard, shade-house and greenhouses 5
- Perform miscellaneous duties as directed by supervisor
Minimum Qualifications:
Possession of a current Horticulture License issued by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry plus three years of experience in horticulture, floriculture, agronomy, landscape architecture, or in the general care of crops, shrubs or plants; OR A bachelor’s degree in a plant science or landscape field of study.
Special or Physical Qualifications:
Due to the nature of this position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67. In accordance with PS-18 this position maybe required to report or stay on campus in the event of emergency or closure. Ability to work in all weather conditions. Overtime and Weekend Work. Ability to lift 50 pounds, must be able to operate a computer, telephone, and other office machinery, bend, squat, twist, and move about to accomplish tasks. This position will require a physical evaluation based on the physical demands required.
