Average 20 hours per week

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Farm Hand’s primary responsibility is to ensure the horses, facilities, and pastures are maintained in top condition, while adhering to existing policies and procedures. The Farm Hand will work closely with the Barn Manager, Executive Director, and other staff in a team-based model of leadership and management of the programs and functions of GaitWay.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintain pastures, including water tanks, fencing, pest control, grass, etc. as assigned by supervisor. Maintain water for all horses, keep buckets clean Clean stalls, pick hooves, and apply fly spray as necessary Provide feed and hay to horses as directed Ensure that the stall aisle is swept after morning and evening feeding Report any safety or maintenance issues to the office immediately Turn in/turn out horses as directed Assist Barn Manager and Maintenance Tech in maintenance of equipment and facility as assigned by supervisor. Assist with special events as directed Report any horse health issue to direct supervisor immediately Keep outhouse clean and remove trash as necessary Make sure trash is placed by gate for pick-up on appropriate day

OTHER TASKS

Communicate with and support other staff as needed to assist in the overall operations of the organization Create a safe environment for horses, staff, volunteers, and riders and ensure humane treatment and use of horses Participate in staff events such as training, special events, and projects Maintain professional standards of appearance, communication, and timeliness Additional duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must have good observational skills. Must be able to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, pull, bend, climb ladders, and carry up to 50lbs. Must be able to work holidays and weekends. Must be able to actively work in inclement weather. Must have fine motor dexterity.
