Opening Date 04/29/2025 Job Description Performs skilled and semi-skilled work on grounds, parks playground equipment, irrigation, landscapes, trees; performs chemical applications and addresses repairs needed within the park system, and related work as required. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Park Services Supervisor. Essential Duties of the Position The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project. Applies pesticides, fungicides, fertilizers, and grass seed to turf areas according to established schedules. Responsible for overall turf and irrigation maintenance plan and implementation. Installs sod on fields and repairs turf with new sod or sprigs. Installs and maintains synthetic turf. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; orders supplies for appropriate materials for work assignments. Installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems. Repairs stormwater BMPs such as rain gardens, dry ponds, and wet ponds. Waters non-irrigated turf, trees, shrubs, etc. Installs, maintains, and trims trees and shrubs, and flowers in various landscapes. Assists in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields. Renovates, grades, and repairs all sports fields. Supervises beautification projects with volunteers. Maintains walking trails. Installs, maintains, and removes playground equipment. Installs and maintains concrete areas including basketball court pads, sidewalks, etc. Tree maintenance including proper pruning techniques and dead tree removal. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Required Education and Experience Knowledge of the methods and techniques of turf management and irrigation, particularly Bermuda grass; knowledge of landscaping practices; knowledge of chemicals used in weed and insect control; knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work and related equipment operation; skill in the use of the equipment and tools of the trade; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. High school diploma or GED and 2 to 5 years of experience in turf management and pesticide application or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate’s degree in turf management is preferred. Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position. Possession of valid NC pesticide application license. Stormwater BMP Inspection & Maintenance certification. This position is subject to Emergency Call Back during emergency situations and inclement weather. Supplemental Information This position’s physical requirements involve heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: balancing, climbing, grasping, handling, hearing, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, and/or walking. Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), and bloodborne pathogens and may require wearing specialized personal protective equipment. Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
