JOB SUMMARY :
The primary responsibility of the Lead Grower will be the day-to-day farm management of Green Leaf Learning Farm. This will involve partnering with the Farm Manager to develop planting plans and crop rotations; planting, transplanting and harvesting; managing farm hands (Growers) and volunteers; maintenance of Farm according to USDA Certified Organic standards, record keeping; interactions with community members, parents, and students; and other farm related responsibilities as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: To collaborate and lead in farm planning, production, harvesting, and distribution activities with Farm Manager To partner with Program Manager to develop community relations and implement community engagement projects To provide day to day maintenance of farm in accordance to USDA organic standards To assist as a “guest” facilitator during Green Leaf Farm Lessons To work alongside existing projects based at the Farm Maintenance of records related to farm activities
- Attends meetings, workshops and trainings as required Support the monitoring and supervision of program participants by maintaining order and ensuring safety Fulfill other reasonable duties and responsibilities of comparable nature as assigned by the Farm Manager and Program Manager Development of a financially self-sustaining and viable farm
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An agricultural or horticulture degree in an accredited program or a minimum of 3 years of agricultural or horticultural prior experience. Experience in working in agricultural production. Experience in working in urban agriculture and low-income communities is desired.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to successfully work with and serve a diverse local community through effective working relationships with others
- Capable of thinking both strategically and putting together detailed operating plans to turn good ideas into well-executed activities
- Knowledge of community resources available to low-income areas regarding nutrition and gardening/farming
- Ability to understand and empathize with the needs and concerns of others; ability to establish rapport with youth
- An understanding of dynamics associated with inner city culture, economics, and social systems
- Willingness to work occasionally with students, their parents and other adults
- Ability to understand and follow technical instructions
- Knowledge and experience growing traditional and heritage crop varieties, seed-saving, etc.
- Ability to assist in the production and management of a business plan for the farm and to monitor plan
- Commitment to create a financially self-sustaining and viable farm
- A valid driver’s license
- Good understanding and/or willingness to learn and implement sustainable horticultural practices
- Enthusiasm to develop the Farm’s profile by engaging with local, regional, and national food networks.
