Primary Purpose of Position:

The Division of Parks and Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic Chief of Natural Resources to direct multiple state-wide scientific management programs with responsibilities including: species and habitat stewardship, fire management, invasive species, restoration of degraded natural areas, training, environmental compliance, and the conservation of significant natural & cultural resources present on lands managed or owned by NC State Parks. These resources frequently represent the highest quality examples of the state’s natural landscape, and their protection and management are mandated by the North Carolina Constitution and the State Parks Act. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Providing professional and supervisory oversight and direction to natural resources section personnel conducting work involved in the science, implementation, and coordination of natural and cultural resource management. Areas of programmatic work involve at minimum: terrestrial and aquatic habitat management, wildlife management, fisheries management, hydrology, invasive species management, fire management, archaeology, scientific research/inventory and monitoring, and ecological restoration. Supervising/performing administrative functions and reviews to include: facilities development and planning reviews, environmental review and compliance, collaboration & engagement with public and private partners, and other support roles for the Division. Ensuring that the natural and cultural resources of the parks are managed in a systematic, consistent, and professional manner that places resource protection above exploitation. Supervising a team of scientists and program managers who determine, oversee and guide regional and state-wide programs and direct on-the-ground management often conducted by field staff at the individual parks. Conducting resource management training Emergency response for ecological emergencies, wildfires, natural disasters and ecological recovery post-disaster.

Position/Physical Requirements:

Work schedule Monday to Friday 8:00 am -5:00 pm. Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, 20 lbs of force frequently, and 10 lbs of force with or without r easonable accommodation. Work requires a variety of physical tasks, visual acuity, and is subject to a variety of environmental conditions. Must be available to work after hours, weekend, and holidays when necessary. Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
