Description of Work
- This is a Time-Limited Position through September 30, 2025 contingent upon renewal of funds
- This position is open ONLY to current North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services employees or former Department of Agriculture & Consumer Service eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126
- This position is located in the Food & Drug Protection Division.
The Food & Drug Protection Division has five functioning sections, including the Food Section, the Dairy Section, the Feed Section, the Drug Section, and the Administrative Services Section. In addition, analytical support is provided to the Food & Feed Sections by the Food & Drug Protection Division’s six laboratory branches, i.e. Feed Laboratory, Fertilizer Laboratory, Food Laboratory, Microbiology Laboratory, Residue Laboratory, and Pesticide Formulations Laboratory. The Division protects the health, welfare, and economic interests of consumers of foods, drugs, livestock feeds, fertilizers, and medical devices by ensuring, thorough inspections and analysis, that these products are wholesome and properly labeled. Duties involve inspections and enforcing regulations as they apply to the manufacture, transport, storage, and sale of food; enforcing established laws and regulations to ensure that food manufacturing, storage, and transportation facilities are adequate to insure a safe, sanitary food supply, as well as adequate identification of the food to consumers via proper label statements. Position conducts inspections of food facilities; collects raw material, product and environmental samples for analysis; takes actions such as embargo or voluntary agreements; conducts investigations and inspections of facilities and food damaged by storms, fires, floods or other disasters. Facilities inspected may include producers of dairy products such as ice cream and cheese, low-acid canned foods, acidified foods, bottle water, prepared salads, bakeries, distribution centers and retail locations. Some overnight travel throughout the state may be involved. Some occasional work may be required after hours. May undergo a background check in order to be commissioned as an Officer with the US Dept. of Health & Human Services in order to do contract work with the Food & Drug Administration.

Within the territory. Work territory consists of the following counties: McDowell, Burke, Avery, Caldwell, Catawba, Alexander, Iredell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany, Wilkes, Surry, Yadkin, Forsyth, and Stokes.

(1) reside within a county in the territory OR (2) reside in NC, within 20 miles, or 30 minutes of any of the counties within the territory OR (3) relocate at own expense, to one of the counties within the territory within four months of employment. - Ability to learn, apply and explain State or Federal laws or regulations pertaining to the manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale of foods.
- Ability to learn about processes, equipment, and techniques used in the manufacture, storage, distribution and sale of foods.
- Ability to learn and apply the principles of food sanitation.
- Ability to display good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. or more.
- Must possess or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both. Bachelor’s degree with a major in biology, food science, home economics or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of food regulatory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
