Position Summary:

Coastal Mountains Land Trust (CMLT) is looking for a motivated and
energetic person to assist with the maintenance and improvement of our 55+ miles of trails. This
seasonal position is 32 hours per week in the summer and fall, based at CMLT’s office in
Camden, Maine. The position will focus on trail and trailhead maintenance, improvement, and
construction projects, but will also help with other conservation land management activities.
Over 75% of the position’s time will be spent doing physically demanding, outdoor work in
semi-remote locations in Knox and Waldo counties, often independently. Ideal candidates love
nature and trails, want to work outside, and wish to learn more land conservation and/or trail
management.

Position Specifics:

This is a seasonal, temporary, four day/week, hourly position (32 hours/week) for 20-24 weeks,
with a starting date in late May to late June. Compensation is $20/hour with 40 hours of paid
time off. Mileage will be reimbursed at the standard IRS rate.

Schedule:

Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday 9am-5pm, with occasional evening work and
some flexibility. Based out of CMLT’s Camden Office but fieldwork will be across 15 towns in
Knox and Waldo Counties.

Work and responsibilities:

1.

Routine trail and trailhead maintenance:

Work such as mowing, weed whacking,
pruning, and clearing.
2.

Trail improvement projects:

Work fixing and improving both hand-built and machinebuilt trails. Projects such as bridge replacements, signage installation, tread work, rock
work, reroutes, gravel and washout repair. etc., Such work may include working with
and/or operating small heavy machinery such as tractors, utility vehicles, and plate
compactors

New trail projects:

Assist with design and construction of new trail projects.

Volunteer management and coordination:

Supervise and lead volunteers who assist with
stewardship projects, primarily Wednesday Morning work crews.
5.

Invasive plant management:

Assist and lead projects surveying, planning for, removing, and
managing invasive plants on CMLT land.
6.

Field data collection:

for annual monitoring, invasive plants, baseline conditions reports, trail
infrastructure, and ecological information.
7. Assist with other administrative or organizational tasks as time allows:

Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated interest in conservation, outdoor recreation, trails, or environmental
    management
  • Graduate of relevant degree program or work experience in relevant field.
  • Ability to independently manage workflow and schedule of weekly tasks.
  • Curiosity and ability to learn quickly with proper instruction.
  • Can helpfully and respectfully talk to volunteers and members of the public.
  • Valid driver’s license and use of personal vehicle with proof of insurance.
  • Working personal cell phone.
  • Experience with basic computer systems; Microsoft suite, email, Google Drive, and
    social media
  • Experience using GPS for data collection. Experience reading and using topographical
    maps and boundary surveys.
  • Ability to safely operate a full-size truck and trailer.
  • Experience with and ability to safely operate power hand tools such weed whackers,
    lawn mowers, drills, chainsaws, etc.,
  • Preferred but not required: Experience building or maintaining trails.
  • Preferred but not required: Living in or with a strong connection to Knox or Waldo
    County.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
Required work will include hiking on and off-trail, digging, using power tools, cutting, lifting,
and carrying heavy loads outdoors for up to 8 hours a day. Work may be in areas with ticks,
mosquitos and flies, browntail moth caterpillars, poison ivy, and other forest pests, and in wet,
hot, humid, or cold conditions. Regular travel is often required in a vehicle of distances
between 5 and 75 miles per day. To Apply
