Job Responsibilities
Under general supervision, responsible for managing the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker population on state forest as well as assist with forest management and wildlife activities.
Oversee and manage the Red-Cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) population on state forest following the US Fish and Wildlife (USFW) Service’s RCW Recovery Plan. Collects, processes, and maintains data for the SCFC and USF&W Service. Follows federal and state guidelines to meet federal requirements. Accomplishes integration of all state forest RCW and threatened and endangered species (T&E) data with state forest harvesting schedule model, and state forest GIS system. Perform nest checks during nesting season, maintain colonies as well as RCW trees within colony, install artificial cavities, maintain RCW habitat, update T&E GIS mapping layer, etc. Assists with forest product sale preparation to include establishment of sale boundaries, timber and pine straw sale evaluation.
Assists with forest management activities including but not limited to timber cruising, timber marking, forest inventory, prescribed burning, wildlife suppression, tree planting checks, wildlife recreation management, other silvicultural activities and general maintenance. Performs administrative record keeping activities. Maintain written and/or electronic records of work performed in compliance with forest certification documents and other agency policies and procedures. Performs other duties as required in support of the SCFC mission and strategic goals. Minimum and Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and two (2) years’ experience in forestry management. An associate’s degree in forestry management or natural resources may be substituted for the required work experience. Must pass the agency’s initial physical fitness test that requires a two (2) mile walk carrying a 25 lb. pack in 30 minutes or meet the agency’s physical fitness program requirements. Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal. Criminal background check and drug test are required. Additional Comments

m. Job may require weekend work from time to time. Overnight travel may be required to include extensive periods of time (up to 16 days) on large fire incidents in/out of state. Employee must have considerable knowledge of forest measurements and timber cruising. Considerable knowledge of forestry management techniques and practices. Working knowledge of geographical information systems and global positioning systems. Must be knowledgeable of general T&E Species accountability and specifically RCW habitat needs and management; must be able to accurately record and maintain related data. Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally. Ability to establish working relationship with employees, other agencies, and the general public. Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb, and carry objects up to 50 lbs. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions. This position is designated as safety-sensitive and essential. This position requires the employee to be subject to random, pre-employment, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace
