The Forest Restoration program works to improve the health of our urban forests. Healthy native plant diversity is essential for ecosystems to properly adapt to urban stresses like climate change, habitat fragmentation, and pollution. Our team improves our urban ecosystems by removing destructive invasive plants and replanting with native species.
Job Description :
Carry out daily maintenance of restoration delegated by program supervisor including invasive plant control, invasive plant mapping, and plant care. Use equipment including but not limited to a hand saw, pruners, a reciprocating saw, a brush cutter, a machete, a hedge trimmer, a weed whacker, a chain saw, a backpack sprayer, a hand sprayer, and a skid sprayer. Learn to properly identify a host of native and invasive plant species present within a greenspace. Lead Forestry Technicians in daily restoration tasks assigned by the Forest Restoration Supervisor. Lead regular weekday volunteer projects. Use a handheld GPS, smartphone, or tablet to collect relevant data in the field, upload to our server and database through ArcGIS Online. Create or update maps of greenspaces as needed.
Requirements:
A valid driver’s license (minimum of three-year history) with a clean record. Proficiency in pickup truck and trailer driving preferred. Ability to conduct strenuous physical activity, lift up to 50 pounds repetitively, and work on uneven terrain. Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions. Comfortable applying herbicides (training required and provided). Occasional flexibility to work on an evening or weekend. Capable of working individually or in a team. Updated tetanus shot Interest in working with plants (specifically native plants) and/or urban ecology.
Preferred Background:
Preferred majors include Ecology, Botany, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Science, Urban Forestry, or a related field of study OR 1-year experience working in a related field. Familiarity with ArcGIS or other GIS mapping systems is helpful Basic knowledge of Southeastern flora is highly desirable
