Description of Work •This position is open ONLY to current North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services employees or former Department of Agriculture & Consumer Service eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126•The North Carolina Forest Service is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, emergency response, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina. This position serves as the Assistant Forest Supervisor for Bladen Lakes State Forest located in Elizabethtown, NC. This position is primarily responsible for overseeing the generation of receipts from forest products, maintaining the Forest infrastructure, providing technical guidance and planning of prescribed burning performed on the Forest, ensuring the maintenance and repair of all equipment on the Forest, overseeing the administrative support program, and supervising four employees. The position also serves as the BLSF safety coordinator. Occasional heavy lifting required. Work is subject to hazards such as fire, pests, wild animals, weather, and difficult terrain. Work is also subject to on-call and rotating shifts and rotation of work areas. Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri. Some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work. Wildfire and disaster/emergency response require year-round readiness and may require extended working hours and days.

Knowledge in the practice of prescribed burning.
Ability to effectively communicate and function as a member of a team. Ability to plan, assign and review the work of direct reports.
Demonstrated ability to meet administrative expectations.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES

Knowledge in the use of GIS software and GPS hardware.
Qualified as a NC Forest Service Burn Boss. Experience preparing written contracts and overseeing forest product sales.
Working knowledge of NC e-Procurement system.
Knowledge of workplace safety programs. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both. Bachelor’s degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution and four years of related professional Forestry experience; or Registered by the NC Board of Registration for Foresters and four years of related professional post registration Forestry experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
