Description of Work Position currently qualifies for a telework option. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management. The North Carolina Forest Service is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, emergency response, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina. The NC Forest Service manages DuPont State Recreational Forest and Holmes Educational State Forest (DSRF/HESF) in Transylvania and Henderson Counties.

is dedicated to the mission of protecting, managing, and promoting forest resources for the citizens of North Carolina.

employs 19 full-time employees, 4 temporary employees, and seasonal staff. Combined annual visitation to

exceeds 1,100,000 people. The Assistant Forest Supervisor will have the primary responsibility of implementing various programs for DSRF-HESF, including forest management, forest infrastructure improvements, capital projects and complex public land partner and cooperator arrangements. The position will provide technical guidance and administrative support for all

DSRF-HESF

programs, as assigned by the Forest Supervisor, with a focus on compliance with the NC Forest Practice Guidelines, wetland and stream regulations, NC Department of Environmental Quality’s hazardous waste guidelines, and the NC Natural Heritage Program. The position will serve as the DSRF leader in employee safety programming, employee incident qualifications, and training for wildfire, prescribed burning and all-risk incidents. The incumbent may serve as the Forest Supervisor as assigned or needed. Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, hunters, intense heat, dust and smoke. Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri. Some work functions require evening, holiday and/or weekend work. Wildfire & disaster/emergency response functions require readiness 24/7. May be a member of incident management team, requiring response to incidents away from home and for extended periods of time. Some overnight travel required for emergency response and/or training. Residency requirements will be discussed at the time of interview.

Experience managing and supervising employees and conducting employee performance reviews and/or evaluations.
Possess strong leadership skills with the ability to positively influence both internal and external individuals or groups.
Knowledge and/or experience promoting and implementing company or agency safety programs and protocols.
Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Knowledge or experience with North Carolina’s Forest Practices Guidelines.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES

Possess strong critical thinking skills that support problem-solving in complex environments, such as regulatory issues, managing the general public and stakeholders with diverse perspectives.
Two or more years of experience working with environmental regulatory agencies at local, state or federal levels.
Experience in public land natural resource management and/or operational planning. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both. Bachelor s degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution and four years of related professional Forestry experience; or Registered by the NC Board of Registration for Foresters and four years of related professional post registration Forestry experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary
