Job Responsibilities
Under general supervision, responsible for daily operational activities of the region to include fire management programs, safety and training program, air operation activities, and other duties.
Assists the Regional Forester with the regional fire management program; serves as the fire resource manager during high fire activity and extended attacks; assists with prescribed burning services; coordinates fire prevention activities and assists the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) coordinator with developing and implementing the regional WUI program. Plans, schedules and coordinates the training and safety programs for the region; develops, implements and monitors training to ensure personnel meet training requirements. Ensures training records are routed to the central training officer.
Supervises the Regional Pilot, reviews and assesses training and development. Ensures the Employee Performance Management System (EPMS) is used as a continuous communication tool. Directs the daily air operation activities for the region; ensures program is within budget and pilot proficiency is within FAA requirements. Responsible for air operation wildfire suppression training and aircraft maintenance.
Incorporates the Incident Command System (ICS) into daily fire management activities. Coordinates with regional personnel and the central training officer to attain the desired fire management levels within ICS. Performs non-routine administrative duties such as assisting with the accountability report and strategic planning report. Serves as the Regional Forester as requested.
Performs additional duties as requested in support of the SC Forestry Commission’s mission and directives. Minimum and Additional Requirements
A bachelor’s degree in forestry from a program accredited by the Society of American Foresters or a bachelor’s degree in forestry or related natural resources field that meets the Society of American Foresters’ Certified Forester educational requirements and three (3) years of forestry experience. A master’s degree in forestry from a college or university accredited by Society of American Foresters can be substituted for one (1) year of experience. Must become SC Registered Forester within six (6) months of being hired. Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal. Criminal background check and drug test are required. Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver’s License (Class D). Must participate in the initial physical fitness test; a walk of two miles in 30 minutes carrying a 25 lb. pack or meet the agency’s physical fitness program requirements. Preferred Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of the SC Forestry Commission regulations, policies, and procedures is preferred. SCFC experience preferred. Supervisory experience preferred. Additional Comments
Must live in the SCFC Piedmont Region and within a radius of 30 miles of their assigned work center. The work center is in the Piedmont Regional Office in Newberry. Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions. Works 37.5 hours, Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm schedule. Job requires on-call duty and weekend work. Overnight travel required to include extensive periods of time (up to 18 days) on large fire incidents in/out of state.
This position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace-Drug and Alcohol Testing. This position is designated as safety sensitive and essential. Considerable knowledge of wildland fire control procedures, forestry management techniques, practices, and technology (GIS). Ability to interpret and apply rules and regulations; ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally. Ability to establish working relationships with employees, other agencies, and general public. Ability to supervise and provide guidance to employees.
