Nature of Work:
The Division Manager of Cemetery is responsible for the overall management, supervision, and administration of city cemeteries. This role oversees cemetery operations, maintenance, staff management, and customer service while ensuring compliance with all regulations and policies. The Division Manager coordinates with funeral homes, contractors, and city officials to provide efficient and respectful cemetery services. Additionally, this position will work closely with the Division Manager of Urban Forestry to coordinate budgeting and necessary joint operations. The Division Manager of Cemetery reports directly to the Director of Parks and Recreation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage and oversee all cemetery operations including maintenance, burial services, and plot sales.
- Maintain cemetery grounds, ensuring they are well kept and presentable to the public.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate cemetery staff; oversee scheduling and work assignments.
- Coordinate with funeral homes, monument companies, and contractors for burial arrangements and site maintenance; as well as address public inquiries, assist families with burial arrangements, and provide excellent customer service.
- Ensure proper recordkeeping of cemetery plots, burials, and related transactions.
- Oversee the opening and closing of graves and ensure all work complies with city and state regulations.
- Manage division budget, resources, and procurement of necessary equipment and supplies, in collaboration with the Division Manager of Urban Forestry.
- Coordinate with the Division Manager of Urban Forestry for necessary joint operations including budgeting and resource allocation.
- Direct and work closely with maintenance teams ensuring that schedules for mowing, burials, and other essential tasks are completed efficiently.
- Participate in maintenance activities as needed to support operational efficiency.
- Operate and oversee the use of cemetery equipment including backhoes, dump trucks, and maintenance tools. Identify equipment repairs needed and coordinate necessary maintenance to ensure operational efficiency.
- Maintain inventory and routine logs for quality and safe vehicles, tools, and equipment; ensuring that all are in proper working condition.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Knowledge/Skills:
- General knowledge of cemetery management practices, procedures, and operations.
- Strong understanding of cemetery layout, recordkeeping, and burial procedures.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for administrative and record-keeping tasks.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and customer service skills.
- Strong coordination skills to effectively manage maintenance teams and schedules.
- Ability to track, maintain, and assess equipment to ensure proper function and safety.
- Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and empathy.
Qualifications:
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in cemetery management or a related field.
Associates degree preferred.
Previous supervisory experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of grounds maintenance and burial operations.
Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver’s License.
Ability to clearly communicate and collaborate with other division managers, maintenance teams, and city officials.
