The City of Lebanon is looking for an experienced professional to join the Cemetery Division of the Public Works Department as a Cemetery Supervisor. The Cemetery Supervisor performs responsible supervisory work for the Public Works Department, in the care and maintenance of all cemeteries under the control of the City of Lebanon. The Cemetery Supervisor is responsible for maintaining plots and burial records for these facilities. This position supervises cemetery ground crew, plans, oversees, and participates in the daily operation and maintenance, and makes recommendations of the City’s cemetery needs, to the Public Works Director. This position provides consolation and consultation services to the families of the bereaved, provides assistance and coordination to Funeral Directors in scheduling burials, opening and closing plots; recording service fees, and maintaining burial records. Additionally, the Cemetery Supervisor oversees a variety of skilled labor tasks and the operation of equipment required for the maintenance, repair and construction of streets, sidewalks, grounds, equipment, and facilities for the Public Works Department. Participation is expected in the year round on-call supervisor’s rotation. Performs all other related work, as required. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Schedules and supervises crew, to include Seasonal employees, in performing cemetery and columbarium maintenance activities, and other related amenities, such as: planting and trimming hedges and shrubs, grading and sodding graves, seeding, watering, fertilizing, mowing and the removal of debris. In conformance with the City’s, Local and/or State policies and procedures, perform administrative record keeping of lot sales, burials, associated service fees and location of graves. Communicates with customers to set-up meeting; meet with customers; review lot layout, rules & regulations, procedures for burial, and fees for services offered; review documents to complete from the City and State of New Hampshire; schedule time for final plot sale and produces the burial records/files. Communicates with families and Funeral Directors to schedule burial date and time; handles concerns of the family members, such as: scheduling funerals, opening of graves, and making other funeral arrangements. Lays out lot and digs holes for burials. Supervises, participates and/or coordinates setting and sealing of vault cover after human remains are placed in the vault; backfills hole; loams, rakes, seeds, and waters grave. Completes file and brings original burial transit or cremation certificate to City Clerk. Enters and maintains burial and lot information in the computer. Supervises, oversees, and/or participates in the planning and scheduling of cemetery ground maintenance, including snow removal to cemetery grounds, buildings and vaults, and all interior access roads. Oversees plumbing installation and repairs of cemetery irrigation and fountains, including repairs; fix leaks; removing clogs; installing and repairing fixtures and hardware. Checks grave markers list and supervises the placement of markers and monuments. Plan and/or schedules Cemetery vehicle and equipment maintenance, such as, but not limited to, oil change, wipers, tires, wash vehicles, install lights, mower, and maintenance of other light equipment. Operates heavy trucks, both single and dual axle, with or without attachments, such as plows, snowplows, sanders, chemical spreaders for plowing, removing and/or hauling of debris, snow, and ice, etc. from public property, streets, roads, and sidewalks and transporting materials. Responds to emergency situations, schedules response crews, allocates necessary supplies and equipment, directs activities, supervises work, and operates equipment. Emergency situations may include construction, maintenance and repair of water and wastewater lines, facilities, roadways, cemeteries, and appurtenances. Operates mowers, skid steer with attachments, sidewalk plow, 1-ton, and other related equipment. Operates front-end loader (non-track) for the loading of materials into trucks. Operations are limited to off-road areas, such as material storage areas. Performs winter snow plowing and salting, sanding, and removal of snow and/or debris. Performs walk around inspection on assigned equipment and preventive maintenance tasks, such as greasing, fluid top offs, etc., necessary for the proper operations of equipment. Promotes and maintains responsive community relations. Requires “On-Call” rotation with Operations & Maintenance and Fleet Supervisor. Evaluates performance of employees. Trains and instructs personnel in job practices and methods of work. Counsels/disciplines personnel, to include, recommending suspensions and/or recommends more severe personnel actions, such as termination, to the Maintenance Manager.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Training, and Experience:
Associate degree is preferred. 2-4 years of experience in cemetery and grounds keeping work, including supervisory or lead experience. Training and/or experience in the research of deeds. Other combinations of education and experience that qualify an individual to perform the requisite job duties and responsibilities may be considered.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Driver’s License with acceptable Motor Vehicle Driving Record. CDL Class B (within six months of hire, if the incumbent does not possess license).
