Job Summary:
The Groundskeeper Lead performs lawn and grounds work of a semi-skilled nature that will vary with the season. Responsibilities involve physical labor pertaining to maintenance of grounds and installation of shrubs, trees, flowers, and other landscaping flora. Work will be conducted mostly out of doors in all weather conditions. The Groundskeeper Lead knows how to safely operate motorized equipment and hand/power tools. Tasks will be assigned in detail by an immediate supervisor and are subject to frequent inspection.
Essential Functions:
Plants and maintains grass and shrubbery. Cleans out flowerbeds, and spreads fertilizer and/or dirt/soil to fill flowerbeds or uneven areas on grounds.
Landscapes new ground areas, repairs damaged ground areas, replaces bushes, hedges, shrubs and trees.
Applies herbicide and pesticide chemicals to grounds, trees, bushes, shrubs, and lawns in order to control plant diseases and insects.
Trims and edges around walks, flowerbeds, walls, fences and buildings using loping shears and clippers. Prunes trees and shrubs to maintain proper and neat appearance.
Removes trash, leaves, and debris from curbs and shrubbery using rakes, shovel and leaf blower.
Cuts grass using push mower. Cuts or removes weeds and grass from sidewalks and edges of buildings using weed eater.
Drives University vehicle on and off campus to transport tools, equipment and supplies, or to deliver sand or mulch to areas being prepared.
Operates mowers, hedge trimmers, weed eaters, sprayers, and related tools in grounds care tasks.
Irrigates lawns, shrubs, and athletic fields during dry periods using hoses or sprinkler system.
Reads work orders, MSDS sheets, instructions for using pesticides and fertilizers.
Dispenses chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers on lawns, shrubbery, flower beds, fence lines, and around buildings.
Stands, walks, stoops, kneels, squats and bends for extended periods of time and on different terrains.
Lifts, moves, and transports mowers (approximately weight 125 lbs.) to campus locations.
Carries leaf blowers, weed eaters, and backpack weed sprayers (approximate weight 25 lbs.) in transport and uses for extended periods of time.
Climbs extension ladders to clean roofs and drains.
Cleans blades of mowers, leaf blowers, and other equipment used.
Observes/inspects grounds, sidewalks, and shrubbery to determine needs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or equivalent required.
Experience as a laborer, farmer, gardener, florist helper, groundskeeper or similar work involving general laborer duties, which may include the planting and maintenance of vegetation, landscaping, nursery inspections, or pesticide applications required.
Valid Alabama state driver’s license.
