DESCRIPTION

QUESTIONS
GENERAL

STATEMENT OF JOB

Performs grounds maintenance, custodial and landscaping tasks; provides safe, attractive, comfortable and clean places in which to conduct business or recreation.

EXAMPLES OF WORK
  • Performs grounds maintenance tasks (i.e., mowing, edging, trimming, planting, irrigation maintenance and repair).
  • Removes debris (i.e., tree branches and trash) from parks, medians, and road right-of-ways.
  • Operates light construction and grounds keeping equipment (i.e., skid-steer loader, compact utility loader, small farm tractor, trencher, riding mower, etc.).
  • Uses appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely, effectively and according to instructions to ensure personal, public and personnel safety.
  • Ensures assigned areas are opened daily and secured upon completion of tasks (i.e., opening/securing gates, locking doors).
  • Performs custodial tasks (i.e., emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; mopping, washing windows; cleaning vents, fans, walls; sanitizing restrooms).
  • Responds to emergency situations (i.e., fires, spills, broken windows and broken locks).
  • Uses light electrical equipment and various hand tools, such as rakes, shovels and hammers in the maintenance of assigned parks, medians and rights-of-way.
  • Cleans equipment and tools after use and maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas.
  • Performs maintenance on equipment (i.e., greasing, inspecting, painting, etc.); reports equipment malfunctions and park/median/right-of-way maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Assists in training of department staff in methods and procedures (i.e., safety, use of equipment).
  • Monitors supplies and materials inventory for the purpose of ordering as needed.
  • Performs minor maintenance and landscaping duties as directed.
  • Reports suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities (i.e., the County Sheriff’s Department).
  • Removes and disposes of the carcasses of dead animals.
  • Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience:

High school diploma or GED supplemented by a minimum of six (6) months’ experience performing landscaping or grounds maintenance tasks, preferably in a commercial or similarly institutional environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Licenses and/or

Certifications:

Requires Ornamental Pest Control certification within eighteen (18) months of hire. Requires a valid driver license.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate a variety of hand-held, electrical and gas-powered equipment and tools, including mowers, blowers, edgers, etc. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 50 pounds frequently, or in excess of 20 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push and pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to perform manual tasks and remain on feet for extended periods of time. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work.

Language Ability:

Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English, including the ability to convey, record and exchange information; requires the ability to explain procedures and to give, receive and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to read and comprehend Standard English, rendered in formats such as cleaning agent instructions, warning labels, equipment operation directions, order forms and other materials related to the job.

Intelligence:

Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in or from standardized situations; to perform manual labor and machine operations; to make independent judgements in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.

Numerical Aptitude:

Must be able to add and subtract totals. May require the ability to multiply and divide.

Interpersonal Temperament:
