Summary Macon-Bibb Cooperative Extension is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to work as a Garden Assistant at the newly organized Gardens at Brookdale. The Gardens includes 50 raised beds, newly established fruit orchard, a pollinator bed as well as additional adjacent planting. The goals of this project, supported by several community partners, is to provide fresh produce to supplement the meals at the Brookdale Resource Center and provide educational opportunities for those in the community wanting to gain knowledge and experience growing their own food. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated yet able to follow both verbal and written instructions, effectively lead volunteers, and preferably have experience with vegetable gardening, fruit production, and/or landscape maintenance. This person must be willing to work by and promote the practices of specialists from UGA (primarily) and/or other land-grant universities. Candidate must be able to follow instructions of the Garden Manager and be able to work independently. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. Harvest crops, record weights, and transport to kitchen for use.
Work with Garden manager and nutrition staff to establish system to effectively collect and move food waste from the kitchen to the compost area in garden.
Start seeds in preparation for upcoming growing season. Plant seeds and/or transplants for seasonal crops in raised beds.
Monitor residents and volunteers as they perform regular garden maintenance including, but not limited to planting, weeding, watering, and pest scouting; Garden Assistant will monitor and complete these tasks when outside groups are unavailable to assist.
Under guidance of Garden Manager, monitor plant and soil health; with support of UGA resources, research and implement methods to improve garden production over time.
Maintain accurate, detailed records, including garden task lists, calendars, checklists, purchase lists and garden records (planting and harvest dates, scouting schedules, inventory, etc.)
Maintain orderly appearance for garden including landscaping, pathways, fence upkeep, compost area, structures, etc. Recognize issues with plumbing, electrical, etc. and communicate to Garden Manager Understand Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and ensure good practices are in place to minimize the need for pesticide use.
Occasional travel may be necessary.
Other duties outside of those listed above will likely arise that will be assigned to Garden Assistant. Education, Training and Experience The Garden Assistant should have knowledge of vegetable gardening in middle Georgia. Experience coordinating and working with volunteer groups. Must be available for evening and weekend work, as needed. Flexibility with work schedule is paramount. Goals for this garden project include public education as well as engaging volunteers. Because of this, as well as the nature of this job, the majority of work time will likely be completed on a workday morning. However, evening and weekend work will be necessary from time to time. Must be able to pass MBCG pre employment screening as well as background check from the University of Georgia.

SUPERVISORY CONTROL AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May offer guidance to youth and adult volunteers on occasion.

TRAVEL:

Occasional travel may be necessary. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to relate compassionately to both youth and adults from a diverse cross-section of the population. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in written form in a professional manner to exchange information, resolve problems, and/or provide service.
Because of current support for this project, Garden Assistant must have willingness to provide UGA research-based information through formal and informal interactions with volunteers and the community.
Excellent organizational and coordination skills
Must be able to work independently and/or with others.
Ability to work in an outdoor urban environment throughout the year regardless of environmental conditions.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and use hand tools with a high degree of dexterity.
Ability to use and maintain tools, supplies and small equipment.
Knowledge of programs associated with Microsoft Office Suite
Experience with detailed recordkeeping and reporting.
Ability to always handle self professionally to work both independently and within a team. Ability to work basic mathematical concepts to determine area and application rates for various garden related materials.
