DESCRIPTION

Maintains airport airside/landside grounds within the guidelines of safety regulations, supervisory instructions, and airport policies and procedures. Reports to Airport Grounds Maintenance Supervisor or other designated person and works with co-workers and the general public to provide maintenance support.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains lawns: Cuts grass by operating conventional mowers and heavy-duty farm tractors with 15-foot ‘wide wing’ mowers; uses a variety of other equipment and machinery to edge and aerate lawns; cleans lawn areas using blower, pitch fork, broom, or water pressure; and replaces damaged sod as required. Ensures airside/landside grounds, ramps, runways, safety areas, etc. are kept clean and clear of any debris that can cause damage to aircrafts, vehicles, visitors, or personnel using heavy machinery (e.g. runway sweeper, forklift, etc.) Daily inspections of airport grounds for related preventive and on-demand maintenance, debris, and reported discrepancies; to include storm prep and post checks. Inspects horticultural aspects of airport. Supervises and maintains practices necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment. Plants and maintains flowerbeds, trees, and shrubbery: Applies fertilizer and pesticides along with distribution of different types of mulch and ground covers; prunes and trims trees and shrubs. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:

High school diploma or G.E.D.

Experience:

Five (5) years of experience in landscaping, grounds keeping, or horticulture.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of power lawn equipment and the principles of operating such equipment, landscaping techniques, along with pesticides, fertilizers, and application techniques. Familiarity with all airside FAA Airplane Traffic and applicable procedures. Proficiency in operating a large, heavy-duty tractor mower, light horticultural machinery, and hand tools. Good communication skills, both oral and written. Demonstrated ability to work independently. Ability to safely operate any vehicle or equipment operating on airfield or ramp (airside) while traveling or communicating with Air Traffic Control (ATC) via handheld, or vehicle mounted radio, or utilizing failsafe communications within regulations. Utilize all PPE related to herbicide applications.

Position requires:

Must pass Criminal History Record Check and Security Threat Assessment. Must maintain appropriate security status at all times.

Licensing:

Possession of a valid driver’s license with good driving history. If State license is other than Georgia or South Carolina, applicant must obtain a license in Georgia or South Carolina within 30 days of employment. OTHER This position requires staff call up in an emergency situation.
