Based on approved Pay Scale by the Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury Position Overview The Building and Grounds Maintenance Specialist plays a key role in maintaining the safety, functionality, and appearance of all Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury properties. This position requires a broad range of maintenance skills, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, and landscaping. The specialist is responsible for performing repairs, preventative maintenance, and janitorial tasks across multiple facilities while ensuring compliance with safety codes and standards. The role demands professionalism, sound judgment, physical capability, and the ability to respond to emergencies or after-hours needs. Key Responsibilities General Maintenance and Repairs Perform routine and preventive maintenance on parish-owned buildings and equipment. Conduct minor electrical repairs, including light fixture replacement, bulb changes, and basic troubleshooting. Handle plumbing tasks such as unclogging drains, fixing leaks, and repairing faucets. Complete basic carpentry work, including door, window, furniture, and trim repairs. Paint and touch up interior and exterior surfaces as needed. Perform minor masonry work, such as repairing cracks in walls or walkways. Maintain and repair HVAC systems, including cleaning filters and performing basic diagnostics. Maintain maintenance logs and report significant issues to the supervisor. Grounds, Equipment, and Exterior Maintenance Maintain parish grounds, parking lots, and landscaping using lawn mowers, trimmers, tractors, and related equipment. Conduct repairs and maintenance on maintenance tools and equipment. Repair and maintain building exteriors including roofs, siding, and gutters. Clean and maintain common areas such as restrooms, hallways, and break rooms. Facility Operations and Event Support Assist with setup and takedown for events held on parish property. Conduct regular inspections of all building systems to proactively identify potential problems. Assist in installing new equipment or systems as needed. Collaborate with external contractors for complex repairs or renovations. Safety, Compliance, and Communication Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety regulations and applicable building codes. Respect the privacy and confidentiality of others. Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance requests from staff and tenants. Use sound judgment and maintain a neat, courteous, and cooperative attitude when dealing with the public and co-workers. Track time accurately on timesheets and manage daily tasks responsibly. Communication and Collaboration Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance requests from staff and facility occupants. Communicate status of work and issues needing escalation to the Building and Grounds Maintenance Supervisor. Coordinate with external contractors when tasks exceed in-house capabilities. Additional Duties Be available for on-call maintenance duties, including emergencies outside normal working hours. Perform other duties as assigned by the Building and Grounds Maintenance Supervisor or Parish Administrator. Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Basic experience or willingness to learn in areas like electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, or landscaping. Able to safely use hand tools, power tools, and basic maintenance equipment. Physically able to lift, carry, climb, and work outdoors in different weather conditions. Can follow instructions, work well alone or with others, and stay on task. Preferred Skills and Qualities Good at figuring out problems and finding simple solutions. Reliable and pays attention to details. Works well with others and communicates clearly. Professional attitude and able to keep information private when needed. Work Hours Standard workweek is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Flexibility required for emergencies, after-hours calls, and special assignments. $12.00 – $13.50 per hour Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
