RESPONSIBILITIES
The Buildings & Groundskeeper for St. John Paul II Parish and St. Mary of the Assumption Parish is a full-time, hourly, benefited position. The Buildings & Groundskeeper is responsible for the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the parish properties in Adams, Cheshire, and Lanesborough. The position involves custodial duties, minor maintenance, and other miscellaneous tasks. Duties include, but are not limited to: Conduct regular weekly inspections of buildings/grounds to proactively identify and resolve maintenance and safety issues. Serve as the primary person responsible for maintaining facilities and equipment as needed such as painting and repairing or replacing various parts. Clean the churches, chapel, gathering spaces, and bathrooms following cleaning schedules based on worship times, funerals, gatherings, and events. Remove trash and properly dispose of recyclable materials. Inspect, monitor, and provide/procure maintenance of electrical, water, carpentry, painting, and other systems to ensure proper operation, safety, and standards. Routinely monitor and adjust building environmental systems, including thermostats, to ensure proper operation and to meet heating and cooling needs for the parish buildings. o Responsible for the seasonal installation and removal of window air conditioners. Coordinate with municipalities and vendors to ensure buildings and internal systems are inspected and certified annually or as required. Recommend projects, upgrades, major changes, and budget items as needed. Work with Business Manager to obtain contracted services and fulfill work orders as needed. Work closely with vendors, service providers, and contractors to protect the interests of the parishes. Maintain parish grounds, ensuring that they are properly maintained by supplementing work done by independent contractors and other third parties. o Occasionally shovel snow and scatter ice-melt. o Water plants and lawn and carry out other miscellaneous outdoor tasks as needed. Maintain inventory of custodial supplies and maintenance tools and equipment. Properly store and maintain records of hazardous materials and supplies. Secure the facilities, including unlocking and locking the buildings as circumstances require. Fulfill requests such as setting up and removing chairs/tables for special events. Participate in special custodial, household, and maintenance projects as needed. Run errands with own transportation as assigned. Participate in facility education programs as assigned. Respond to on-call work as needed for emergencies, snow removal, or other circumstances that arise. Assist with set-up and preparations for major Holy Days such as Christmas and Easter, working closely with the Pastor, Business Manager, decorating teams, and sacristans. Qualifications Proven experience in general maintenance, carpentry, and equipment repair. Strong communication skills. Hard-working, organized, flexible, and reliable. Able to prioritize tasks to make good use of time. Respect, cooperate and positively interact with Pastor, Business Manager, staff, parishioners Good physical condition and strength with a willingness to work overtime and the ability to lift and carry up to 70 pounds. Access and maneuver in confined spaces Operate equipment such as snow blowers, lawn mowers, floor cleaning machinery, vacuum cleaners, etc. Climb tall ladders and go into places of high elevation. Must have a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle. Must successfully pass a CORI and/or Out of State Background Check Special Skills Must be willing to support the mission of the Catholic Church. Be able and willing to assist the pastor, staff, ministries, volunteers, parishioners, and visitors as needed for a variety of purposes. Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and use good judgement in all matters Have a welcoming and professional demeanor, strong communication skills, attention to detail, be organized, self-driven and able work independently, adhering to timelines, etc.
