Performs responsible semi-skilled work in the maintenance and care of the grounds and related structures and equipment. Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class performs various duties related to grounds keeping to include, mowing, trimming of shrubs and trees, trash collection, raking leaves, etc. Employee will be required to use a variety of equipment to accomplish assigned job responsibilities. Employee will also assist in other areas of the Public Works Department dependent upon the need. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Public Works Manager and is evaluated through periodic discussions, observation and quality of work performed. Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Mows grass, weed eats and edges; rakes leaves.
- Trims bushes and trees.
- Uses chemicals and fertilizer in grounds maintenance activities.
- Removes debris from County grounds and parking lots.
- Assists with carpentry, plumbing, painting and other building maintenance tasks.
- Picks up and delivers supplies to County offices; unloads delivery trucks.
- Changes light bulbs; moves furniture. Additional Job Duties

- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public. Physical Requirements
- Work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force.
- Work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting.
- Work has standard vision requirements.
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Work requires operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to blood-borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
- Work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.
g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant). Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school with minimal experience in lawn care; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire.
