Monday – Friday; flexible hours between 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with rotating weekend watering duties (approx. 1 weekend per month). Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s coursework in horticulture, plant science, botany, landscape technology, or a related field Working in a greenhouse or nursery setting (seed sowing, cuttings, grafting) Experience installing hardscape elements (mulch, decorative stone, garden paving) Irrigation system operation, maintenance and installation Participation in native-plant restoration or invasive species removal projects Duties and Responsibilities The primary purpose of the position is to provide grounds maintenance assistance for the outdoor gardens management team. The Garden Assistant (GA) serves as a member of a garden maintenance crew providing high level management and aesthetic quality to the landscape within the 12 acre Botanical Gardens site. This position also assists with annual and permanent planting activities, mulching, weeding, debris removal, bed preparation, pruning and sanitation. Additionally, the GA may assist with turf related tasks such as mowing, blowing, edging, trimming. The GA may be asked to provide occasional cleanup tasks in the McMillan Greenhouse. Other duties may include the following: Monitor pond area, scout for fire ants and yellow jacket nests and other hazards. Operate and assist with the maintenance of standard garden equipment (mowers, leaf blowers, etc.) Maintaining gravel pathways (hauling and spreading crushed stone) Building and repairing small stone garden walls and similar stone structures.
