Description Performs general labor functions, frequently of a repetitive nature. The duties require physical exertion and the ability to perform heavy physical labor efficiently. Work involves the ability to use manual tools on routine tasks. The duties range over a wide variety of municipal activities; including, but not limited to – construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, bridges, rights-of-way, water & sewer infrastructure, and Borough facilities; as well as equipment operation, landscaping, debris removal, winter maintenance of roads and sidewalks, and assisting in other Public Works duties. Work is performed in all weather conditions during regularly scheduled hours, but may involve additional hours as needed due to emergency situations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform daily tasks assigned by the Public Works Crew Leader and/or Borough Manager
Must be able to work in an environment that may contain dirt, dust, noise, unpleasant fumes/odors, vibration, poor lighting, confined spaces, allergens, extreme heat, extreme cold, chemical fumes and exposure, wetness and/or humidity
Perform winter maintenance of streets & sidewalks (plowing, salting, shoveling, etc.)
Operate hand tools such as shovels, power tools, chainsaw, weed whacker, and road saw
Operate Borough equipment such as Kubota lawn tractor, dump truck, backhoe, street sweeper and mini-excavator
Assist the Head Water and/or Head Sewer Operator with daily testing and sampling as required by PADEP
Assist in maintenance, repair, and installation of the water and/or sewer infrastructure
Meter reading & trouble shooting, -water shut-offs
Perform street repair and maintenance including, but not limited to, repairing manholes and sidewalks, fixing/installing signs, trimming trees, ditch mowing, line striping, and maintenance of culverts, catch basins and stormwater retention systems
Use mowers, cutters, edgers and other necessary equipment to perform landscaping, grass mowing and related grounds maintenance
Maintenance & repair of tools and equipment
Required On-Call status (every 3rd week)
Weekend Duty on a rotating basis
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Experience plowing snow
Heavy equipment experience
Must be able to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions
Must be able to communicate orally and in writing Must be able to comprehend and respond to oral and written instructions
Must be willing to update skills and learn new skills as necessary
Must be able to work well with a team and independently
Must be able to communicate with contractors and residents politely and professionally
Must be organized and able to multitask
